Baseball Rallies For Nine Runs In the Ninth to Win The Series Rubber Game Against Fairfield

FAIRFIELD, CONN.- After trailing by five runs, the Saint Peter's University baseball team rallied for nine runs in the top of the ninth to capture an 11-7 win over Fairfield University in the series' rubber game.

With the victory, the Peacocks win their second straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series to start the season at 4-2 in league play and 10-16 overall.

Fairfield falls to 9-17 and 3-6 MAAC.

James Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) finished 3-for-3 with two runs scored in the win, while Robert Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood High School) and Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) finished with two hits each. Moore scored two and Mancini scored one.

Pinch hitter Chris Grimes (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) came to bat twice in the ninth, with his second attempt resulting in a three-RBI double to put the Peacocks in front for good.

Nathaniel Leon (Brooklyn, N.Y./Archbishop Molloy) registered the win to improve to 2-0, after pitching three innings of relief and giving up just one run and four hits.

Jack Giannini and Jake Salpietro each recorded three hits for the Stags.

Saint Peter's trailed from the early going, as the Stags scored two in the second and added a single run in the fourth and three more in the fifth. The Peacocks finally got on the board in the sixth on consecutive RBI singles by Brian Schroeder and Smith to bring the visitors within four at 6-2.

Fairfield tacked on a final run in the eighth, and seemed to be heading towards securing the series win before the Peacocks' offense errupted in their final turn at bat.

Smith would start off the inning with a hit by pitch and proceeded to move to second as William Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) received the base on balls. Grimes would pinch hit and pop out to second to account for the first out of the frame, before a two-bagger by freshman Jon Kristoffersen (Jefferson, N.J./Jefferson Township High School) scored Smith and moved pinch runner Ariel Ramirez (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/Babeque) to third.

A sacrifice fly by Matt Speckmann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) made the score 7-4, and a single by Mancini put runners on first and third. An RBI base hit by Nicholas Henriquez (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) made it a two-run game, until a bases loaded walk by Brian Schroeder (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) two batters later knotted the score.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Ariel Ramirez would be hit by a pitch to bring home Moore for the go-ahead run. Chris Grimes followed up with his three-run double to give the Peacocks a four-run cushion.

Mancini, who started the game at center field, took the mound in the bottom of the ninth to record a one-two-three inning and seal the win for Saint Peter's.
