JERSEY CITY, N.J.- Brian Schroeder (Iselin, N.J./JFK-Iselin) finished 3-for-5 with four RBIs to lead the Peacocks (12-19) to a come-from-behind 12-8 victory over the visiting Wagner College Seahawks (13-20) on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Freshman Vincent Maietta (Franklin Square, N.J./St. Mary's) also finished with three hits in the win and drove in two runs while scoring one.
Matt Speckmann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), Robert Moore (Ridge, N.Y./Longwood High School) and Garrett Luna (Lodi, N.J./Paramus Catholic High School) each recorded two hits. Speckmann scored three runs while William Rawson (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) went 1-for-2 drove in three runs and scored one.
Adam Purcilly (Troy, Mich./Avondale) picked up his first win of the year, giving up five earned runs in seven innnings of work.
Wagner was led by Nick Dini who finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs.
The Peacocks found themselves trailing by two after the Seahawks scored a pair of runs in the first inning. Speckmann led off the frame with a triple to center, and crossed home in the next at bat on a sacrifice fly by Rawson.
Wagner made up for the run in the third scoring on a sacrifice fly of their own by Nick Dini (3-1), but that would be the last time the visitors were on top as the Peacocks tagged Seahawk relief pitcher Steven Bloodworth for seven runs.
Schroeder led off the inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a fielder's choice groundout by Moore. The first-basemen would move to third on a Wagner error. An RBI basehit by Maietta made it a one-run game, followed by a two-RBI single by Luna to five Saint Peter's their first lead of the contest (4-3). Speckmann drove in the fifth run of the game with a single up the middle before Schroeder delivered the biggest blow of the inning- a three RBI double down the left field line to pad the hosts' lead to 8-3.
Three runs by Wagner in the next inning made it a two-run game, but the Peacocks responded with three of their own in the bottom of the frame to erase the comeback attempt. With the bases loaded, Rawson singled through the right side to score Nick Cardamone (Freehold, N.J./Freehold Township High School) and and Jon Kristoferssen, who each walked to get on base. Schroeder drove in Speckmann for his fourth RBI of the game (11-6).
Saint Peter's added a final run in the seventh on a basehit by Maietta to bring home Moore who tripled on to start the stanza. Wagner managed to score two in the eighth on a two-run single by Jayson Keel, but Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North) finished out the contest to secure the win for the hosts.
With the win, the Peacocks finish the year at 1-3 against the Seahawks after dropping a three-game series to Wagner in Staten Island, N.Y. during Easter weekend.
Saint Peter's will face off against FDU tomorrow afternoon at 3pm in Teaneck, N.J.
