Baseball Trio Named To All-MAAC Second Team

JERSEY CITY, N.J. –Matt Mancini (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North), Matt Speckmann (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and James Smith (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), members of the Saint Peter's baseball team, have been named to the All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team, announced on Wednesday.

Mancini, a senior outfielder, paced the Peacocks with a .298 batting average with 54 hits, 28 runs scored, three doubles and nine RBIs. The senior was just as consistent in league games, posting a .292 batting average with 26 hits, 11 runs scored, a double and three RBIs.  Mancini had 17 multi-hit performances for the year, including four hits against Cornell on Mar. 1 and against Temple on Apr. 10.

Speckmann, a senior second basemen, ranked fourth on the squad with a .279 batting average with 50 hits, a team-best 34 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, a homer and 32 RBIs. The senior had 16 multi-hit performances in 2013, including going 9-for-15 with two runs scored and two RBIs in a span of three games against Rutgers on May 7 and two games against Siena on May 11 and 12.

Smith, a junior catcher, was second on the team with a .285 batting average, 37 hits, 21 runs scored, 10 doubles, a homer and 25 RBIs on the year. Smith was the team's top hitter in league play, boasting a .318 batting average with 21 hits, 12 runs scored, three doubles, a homer and 13 RBIs. Behind the plate, the junior threw out 33 of the 49 runners attempting to steal to boast a 40.2 percentage.

Saint Peter's finished the season 17-34 overall and 9-15 in MAAC play.
