JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The countdown continues with another win for Saint Peter's against a member of the Big East Conference. The Peacocks baseball team rallied for a 10-4 victory against Rutgers on May 7 to capture the No. 14 Moment in our 2012-13 Top-15 Countdown.
Just like the win for men's soccer against Seton Hall, the baseball team took down another Big Conference School. It was the first meeting between to the two programs since 2005 and the Peacocks first win in the on-and-off series since 1992.
Trailing 3-2 after the first inning, Saint Peter's scored eight of the final nine runs in the contest to earn the victory.
In the third, the Peacocks scored three times to take the lead it would not relinquish at 5-3. Senior Matt Speckmann got the rally started when he reached to lead off the stanza and then came around to score on Nicholas Henriquez's RBI single through the right side. Robert Moore followed with a single through the right side and Chris Grimes reached on a fielder's choice. William Rawson then plated Moore courtesy of a Scarlet Knights' error and Grimes touched home on Pat Farrell's single back through the box to give Saint Peter's a two-run lead.
Saint Peter's added a run in the fourth to take a 6-3 edge. Matt Mancini walked and moved to second on a wild pitch before Moore plated Mancini on an RBI single to right field.
The Peacocks then put the game away in the eighth with four runs. Farrell and Vincent Maietta started the inning with gap singles before Jon Kristoffesen loaded the bases with an infield single. Speckmann made it four-straight singles with an RBI single to center to bring home Farrell. Mancini reached on a fielder's choice to score Maietta and then helped Saint Peter's score the third run of the frame when he stole second and Kristoffersen crossed the plate on the throwing error on the play. Moore added the fourth run of the inning on a double to plate Mancini for a 10-3 advantage.
Rutgers scored one run in the bottom of the ninth, but the Peacocks came away with the 10-4 decision.
Saint Peter's jumped on the board in the first inning with two runs. Speckmann doubled down the right field line to open the game and Mancini reached on an error before both runners came around to score on Moore's two-run single up the middle for a 2-0 margin.
The Scarlet Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the stanza to take a 3-2 edge.
After allowing three runs in the first inning, Adam Purcilly only allowed five base runners to reach in the next six innings, including two courtesy of errors to pick up the victory. The junior allowed three runs on six hits with two strikeouts in seven innings of work. John Leiter came in to pitch the final two innings.
Moore led the offense with a 4-for-5 performance with four RBIs and a run scored. Speckmann added three hits, two runs scored and an RBI while Mancini scored three runs and added an RBI in the winning effort.
Mancini, Speckmann and James Smith were named the All-MAAC second team. Mancini paced the team with a .298 batting average, 54 hits, 28 runs scored, three doubles and nine RBIs. Smith was second on the team with a .285 batting average, 21 runs scored, 37 hits, 10 doubles, a homer and 25 RBIs while Speckmann batted .279 with 50 hits, 34 runs scored, seven doubles, two triples, a homer and 32 RBIs.
