LAFAYETTE, LA – The Saint Peter's University baseball team fell, 6-1 to the No. 15 nationally ranked Louisiana Lafayette team on Saturday afternoon. The Peacocks record drops to 0-3 on the season.
One day after being shutout to the nationally ranked Cajuns, the Peacocks struck first in the second inning after Jake Regina (Rutherford, NJ / Rutherford (Gloucester CC)) singled to right center driving home Mike Iona (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) from second base, giving Saint Peter's a 1-0 lead.
Louisiana Lafayette, answered scoring the go-ahead run in the bottom of the second inning, taking a 2-1 lead on two unearned runs. The Cajuns added two more runs in the third, and one run in the fifth and sixth innings each.
The Peacocks earned five hits in the loss one day after getting just one hit with two outs in the ninth inning. The Peacocks got three hits in the third and added one hit in the eighth and one in the ninth innings.
Jose Martinez (Browns Mills, NJ/Remberton Township (Hartford CC)) was the leading hitter for the Peacocks, going 2-for-4 on the evening. Anthony Ramos (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) also recorded a hit in his only at bat of the day pinch-hitting in the top of the eighth inning.
Saint Peter's starting right-handed pitcher, Anthony Assante (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) picked up the loss after surrendering four runs (two unearned) in 3.0 innings on six hits against the 16 batters he faced. Assante's record drops to 0-1 on the season.
The Peacocks three-game series with Louisiana Lafayette will conclude on Sunday March 12 at 1p.m., with the final game of the series.
