Baseball Drops Saturday Afternoon Meeting against hOURglass Rival Rider

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University baseball team suffered a 15-1 defeat to conference rival, Rider University on Saturday afternoon. The Peacocks MAAC record drops to 0-4 and the teams overall record drops to 0-12 on the season.

"We need to put the ball in play more," said head coach Danny Ramirez. "We have to cut down on the strikeouts early in the game, especially with runners in scoring position. I am looking forward to tomorrow's doubleheader with Rider again and we will be looking to take the first one."

The Peacocks had an opportunity to score first in the bottom half of the opening inning as the squad loaded the bases with no outs. Lead off hitter, Paul Schifilliti (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) got things going first with a single. James Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) and Mike Ionta (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) each followed with singles of their own, putting all three runners in scoring position. Clean-up hitter Jose Martinez (Browns Mills, NJ/Remberton Township (Hartford CC)) came up to the plate looking to get the Peacocks on the board first, but struck out looking. Jake Regina (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford (Gloucester CC)) and Anthony Ramos (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) followed, and both struck out swinging to end the inning with three batters stranded.

Rider put together a rally over the next two innings that consisted of eight runs, on seven hits led by Lee Lipinski's two-run homerun in the third and Richie Tecco's three RBIs throughout the two innings.

The Peacocks got their lone run of the day in the bottom of the fifth inning when Martinez hit an RBI single that scored Schifilliti, cutting the deficit to 8-1.

Rider added four runs in the sixth, two runs in the seventh, and one run in the eighth to improve its margin to 15-1 over the Peacocks.

Despite losing 15-1, the Peacocks had just one less hit than Rider, as the hit total was 12-11 in favor of the Broncs. Saint Peter's left 10 on base in the game and was struck out 13 total times in the loss, which proved to hurt the team in the contest.

Saint Peter's starting right-handed pitcher, Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, NJ/Saint Mary) (0-3) received the loss in the game after pitching 3.0 innings and giving up seven earned runs on seven hits. Krajnik struck out three and walked four on the day. Tom Puza (Point Pleasant, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) and Cole Robbins (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) had the two-best pitching outputs of the day for the Peacocks in relief, as they combined to pitch 4.0 innings with four strikeouts, only allowing just one hit and one run.

Saint Peter's and Rider will continue their series at Jaroschak Field tomorrow on Sunday, April 9 with a doubleheader. The first game is at noon and the second game will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
