Marist Earns Saturday Sweep over Baseball

JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University baseball team was defeated by Marist College in both games of a doubleheader on Saturday. The Peacocks dropped the games, 17-6 and 27-6 to the Red Foxes.

"Marist was very good offensively today. They worked counts and capitalized when our pitchers fell behind in the count. We scored a few runs which was a good sign but in the end we just couldn't keep up with Marist's offense. Tomorrow we'll send Senior Michael Ammerman to the mound. Mike has been a solid starter for us this year, I like our chances in the last game of the series," said head coach Danny Ramirez.

Game 1

Marist scored three runs in the first inning, jumping out to a 3-0 lead over the Peacocks. Red Foxes team leader, Frankie Gregoire got the team going with an RBI single to left field that scored Anthony Lazar who reached base after a leadoff single. Cleanup hitter, Greg Kocinski added a RBI single that scored Andrew Rouse from third, and Gregiore scored all the way from second after an error by the right fielder.

The Peacocks answered in the bottom half of the first inning, when leadoff hitter Paul Schifilliti (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) got on base with a double to center field, then crossed home on Mike Ionta's (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) double to right field, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Peacocks added another run with Jose Martinez (Browns Mills, NJ/Remberton Township (Hartford CC)) driving in Ionta after his RBI single to center field.

With the score locked at 3-2 through two innings, Marist added three runs in the top of the third inning, to extend the lead to 6-2.

The score remained 6-2, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning. Leading off the inning, Schifilliti again got on base with a double to left field. Anthony Ramos (North Bergen, NJ/North Bergen) got the rally going with a RBI double that sent Schifilliti home. With the bases loaded, Brian Turton (Jefferson, NJ/Jefferson Township) hit a sacrifice fly to center field that allowed Ionta to tag up and score from third. Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) came up the plate next, and hit a RBI single to left field which scored Martinez from third base, cutting the deficit to 6-5. James Spadaccini (Butler, NJ/Butler) knotted the contest up with his run off of Jesse Matos' (Bayonne, NJ/Marist) single to right field. The four run inning rally for the Peacocks evened the game at 6-6.

Marist quickly responded with a five-run inning in the sixth to break the tie and take an 11-6 lead. The Red Foxes then added three runs in the eighth inning and three runs in the ninth inning to win game one, 17-6.
