JERSEY CITY, NJ – The Saint Peter's University baseball team was defeated by Rider University by Lehigh in non-conference action on Wednesday. The Mountain Hawks edged the Peacocks 15-5 in the seven-inning contest.
Hunter Mason (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was the offensive leader for the Peacocks accounting for two RBIs, two runs scored, and a homerun. Mike Ionta (Westfield, NJ/Westfield) also had a good outing, going 3-for-4 with one run scored.
Lehigh scored one run in the opening inning, to take a 1-0 lead over the Peacocks.
The Peacocks scored the game-tying run in the bottom of the second inning when Cole Robbins (Toms River, NJ/Toms River East) hit a triple into center field that scored Mason.
Over the next two innings, Lehigh scored two runs in the second and five in the fourth, extending its lead to 8-1.
The Peacocks responded with Mason's two-run homer, cutting the deficit to 8-3.
Lehigh again added another three runs to make it an 11-3 game, but the Peacocks responded with a two-run fifth inning when Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) hit an RBI single for one run and Jose Martinez (Browns Mills, NJ/Remberton Township (Hartford CC)) scored on a fielders choice from third cutting the score to 11-5.
Lehigh scored four more runs over the next two innings to knock off the Peacocks 15-5.
Saint Peter's is back in action this weekend for a series with Siena College.
