KISSIMMEE, FL – The Saint Peter's baseball team began the season at Osceola County Stadium in Kissimmee, FL with a 5-1 setback to unbeaten Butler. The Peacocks fall to 0-1 on the season. The Peacocks continue action at the neutral site with a meeting against UMass on Saturday.
The Peacocks took a 1-0 lead over the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second when Tom Campo (Pine Beach, NJ / Toms River South) grounded out to short, sending home Jared Quintero (Paterson, NJ / Passaic County Tech HS) from third base.
The Peacocks limited the Bulldogs to just two hits over the next pair of innings, before Butler scored the game-tying run in the top of the fifth after a wild-pitch from starting pitcher, Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, NJ / Saint Mary).
In the seventh, Butler scored the go-ahead run against the Peacock's bullpen, taking a 2-1 lead, and then added three late runs in the ninth to secure the 5-1 victory over the Peacocks. Over the final three innings, the Peacocks only recorded one hit and suffered two three and outs to close the game.
The Peacocks earned six hits in the loss, while only giving up eight hits to the Bulldogs. The difference in the score came due to the Peacocks having eight left on base. Quintero was the leading hitter for the Peacocks, going 2-for-3 with a run on the day. Mike Ionta (Westfield, NJ / Westfield) also had a good day at the plate, going 2-for-4.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Chris Pimentel (Bronx, NY / LaSalle Academy) earned the defeat after facing two batters in relief in the bottom of the seventh, going 0.0 innings. Pimentel (0-1) gave up the go-ahead earned run in the inning.
The Peacocks continue the neutral site series in Kissimmee, FL at Osceola County Stadium with meetings against UMass (March 3), Butler (March 4), and Pitt (March 6).
