NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Peacock starting righty, Willie Krajnik (Lyndhurst, NJ / Saint Mary) pitched a complete game on the mound for the Saint Peter's baseball team leading to a 7-1 win for the Peacocks. The win ended the longest losing streak in program history and was the first for the team since May 20, 2016. On the day, the Peacocks and Gaels split the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader, with Iona taking the second game of the day.
With Krajnik getting the start, the senior pitcher retired six of the first eight batters that he faced through two innings. The Peacocks then jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the third before Krajnik gave up a home run in the bottom half of the inning, his only blemish of the day.
Tied up at 1-1 in the top of the fourth, Cole Robbins (Toms River, NJ / Toms River East) drew a walk with the bases loaded after falling behind 0-2, scoring Angel Perez (Jersey City, NJ / Marist HS) who was at third, giving the Peacocks the 2-1 lead. In the bottom of the frame, the Peacock defense produced a 1-2-3 inning with all three Iona batters popping or flying out.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Peacocks again successfully loaded the bases, this time with senior Anthony Assante (Brick, NJ / Brick Memorial) stepping up to the plate with one out. Assante doubled down the left field line, sending home Jared Quintero (Paterson, NJ / Passaic County Tech HS) and Perez, putting the Peacocks up 4-1. Krajnik continued his dominance on the mound in the bottom half of the inning, as he retired the side, striking out 2-of-3 batters faced in the inning.
With the Peacocks still holding a 4-1 advantage heading into the final inning, the team added insurance runs when Chris Marquart (Hackettstown, NJ / Morris Catholic) hit a two-run single to center, scoring Quintero and Perez to extend the Peacocks lead over Iona to 6-1. Alex Slawinski (Carteret, NJ / Carteret) followed with a double, moving Marquart to third, before Robbins hit a single, allowing Marquart to score and extend the lead to 7-1 for the Peacocks. The Peacocks' defense and Krajnik closed out the game with another three up and three down inning to earn the team's first win of the season.
Krajnik pitched all seven innings for the complete game victory, throwing strikes on 68 out of his 107 total pitches. Krajnik struck out seven batters that he faced and only gave up three hits and one run on the afternoon.
Robbins, Assante, and Marquart all recorded two RBI in the win. Perez led the Peacocks with three runs scored, while Quintero scored twice and Marquart and Slawinski each crossed home plate once.
Iona earned a 19-2 victory over the Peacocks. The leader for the Peacocks in the second contest of the day was Tom Campo (Pine Beach, NJ / Toms River South) who went 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI. Nick Ciocco (Cherry Hill, NJ / Cherry Hill) also gained an RBI in the game and runs were scored by Robbins and Assante.
The Peacocks close out the 2018 season in Loudonville, NY with a MAAC series against Siena College. The teams will meet in a doubleheader on Thursday, May 17 at noon, followed by a single game on Friday, May 18 at noon.
