SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – The Saint Peter's men's basketball team played tough against nationally ranked in-state rival, Seton Hall on Tuesday, but ultimately fell 84-61 to the Pirates in the historic Walsh Gymnasium.
Davauhnte Turner (Simsboro, LA/Independence CC/Gambling HS) scored a Peacock-high 13 points and added three rebounds. Quinn Taylor (Amarillo, TX/Tascosa) notched 10 points and continued to lead the team in rebounds with a team-best seven boards. Nick Griffin (Rockville, MD/George Washington/Col. Zadok Magruder) added nine points, while Samuel Idowu (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette Educational Complex) and Julian Powell (Baytown, TX/Lee College/Goose Creek Memorial) scored seven points each for Saint Peter's (4-5).
15th ranked Seton Hall (9-1) scored more than half of its points in the paint, led by All-American, Angel Delgado, who recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Desi Rodriguez scored 17 points and Khadeen Carrington tallied 11 points and dished out a team-high of five assists.
Seton Hall jumped out to an 8-0 lead, before Idowu scored the Peacocks first basket, four minutes into the game on a second chance bucket after grabbing his own rebound from a miss. The Peacocks eventually fell behind, 26-8, but found an offensive spark scoring on three straight possessions when Griffin hit a layup coming by an assist from Elijah Gonzales (Portland, OR/Clackamas), at the 7:07 mark. On the ensuing possession, Idowu drained a three, followed by a layup from Taylor, making the score, 31-15. Taylor hit another jumper for the Peacocks, to cut the deficit to, 31-17. The Peacock continued to get offensive opportunities; Nnamdi Enechionyia (Springfield, VA/Samford/St. James School) hit three free throws after being fouled behind the arc and Gonzales made a three-pointer, pulling the Peacocks to a 12-point deficit (35-23) with two minutes left in the half. The Pirates scored the final seven points of the half, taking a lead of 42-23 over the Peacocks into the locker room.
In the second half, Seton Hall pushed the lead over the Peacocks to 20 points. Saint Peter's managed to get the game back into the teens, led by a Griffin jumper, a trifecta from Mamadou Ndiaye (Laurel, MD/Oakland Mills) and a three from Griffin, as the Peacocks trailed the Pirates, 54-38, with just under 13 minutes on the clock. Seton Hall answered with a 7-0 run, extending its lead to 61-38. The Pirates maintained the 20-plus point lead over the Peacocks, as Saint Peter's got within 21 points twice at 61-40 and 67-46. Over the final seven minutes Seton Hall outscored Saint Peter's, 17-15, leading to the final of, 84-61.
The Peacocks close out the non-conference road slate on Sunday, December 17 when the team travels across the Hudson to face LIU Brooklyn. Tip-off on Sunday is set for 12pm at the Barclays Center.
