Turner and Jones Combine for 44-Points as Late Rally Lifts Men’s Basketball Over Marist

JERSEY CITY, NJDavauhnte Turner (Simsboro, LA/Independence CC/Gambling HS) and Cameron Jones (Fairless Hills, PA/Pennsbury) combined for 44-points to lead the Saint Peter's men's basketball team to a 70-66 comeback victory over Marist College on Thursday night in the Yanitelli Center. The Peacocks outscored the Red Foxes 25-10 over the final 7:28 to give the Peacocks their fourth Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory of the season.

Turner surpassed 30 points for the second time this season, knocking down four 3-pointers and shooting 50 percent from the field (10-20) while Jones matched his season-high of 14 points for Saint Peter's (10-14, 4-9 MAAC).

Marist (5-20, 3-10 MAAC) had four players score in double-figures, led by Brian Parker's 12 points. Isaiah Lamb and David Knudsen each scored 11 points and Tobias Sjoberg added 10 points for the Red Foxes in the defeat.

"I am really happy for our guys, I think they deserved this win," said head coach John Dunne. "We've lost some tough ones along the way and in the past, we've put our heads down and felt sorry for ourselves when we have gotten down. Today we didn't. Today we just fought. These two guys [Turner and Jones], sparked us offensively, and sparked us coming off of the bench."

Marist jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first half, forcing Saint Peter's into an early timeout. Following the timeout, the Peacocks outscored the Red Foxes 12-4, powered by 3-pointers from Turner to start the run and end the run, giving the Peacocks their first lead of the night at 12-11. Marist responded with a 3-pointer to retake the lead and the Red Foxes kept the lead for the remainder of the half, taking a 32-29 lead over the Peacocks into the break.

In the second half, the Peacocks remained within one possession of Marist early, never falling behind by more than three points and regaining the lead 39-38 after a basket by Samuel Idowu (Brooklyn, NY/Lafayette Educational Complex) by the first media break of the half. The lead changed hands four times following the Idowu basket and the Peacocks went up 45-44 after Nick Griffin (Rockville, MD/George Washington/Col. Zadok Magruder) made his only 3-pointer of the night. Marist responded by going on a 12-0 run that extended their lead to 56-45 with just under seven and a half minutes to play. Over the final 7:28, the Peacocks put together the 25-10 run which was led by Turner and Jones who combined to score all but five points for the Peacocks through the stretch. Trailing 66-65, Saint Peter's forced a travel violation with 1:08 left. On the ensuing possession, Idowu got free off of a pick-and-pop and drained the go-ahead trifecta with 55 seconds to go. Leading 68-66, the Peacocks forced Marist into a contested corner 3-pointer that missed and the Peacocks recovered the rebound with 35 seconds left. On the final Peacock drive, Turner scored the game-sealing layup with 11 ticks left on an isolation, giving the Peacocks a 70-66 win.

The Peacocks conclude the four-game home stand on Saturday, February 10, with a noon meeting against two-time defending MAAC champion, Iona.
