AUSTIN, TX – Freshman Ryan Rodriguez (Highland Mill, NY/Cornwall Central) shot a one over par, finishing tied for 18th to pace Saint Peter's after the first round of the NCAA Men's Golf Austin Regional on Monday.
Rodriguez had the best day for the Peacocks, after shooting a team low 72 (+1). The freshman posted birdies on the 11th, 13th and 14th while shooting a one under par on the front nine. Rodriguez made par on 12 out of the 18 holes on day one and hit two bogeys. He heads into day two six strokes behind the leader, Scottie Scheffler of host school, Texas.
Senior Dominic Diaz (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) ended his day second on the squad after posting a 10 over par day for an 81 round. Diaz hit bogeys on eight holes and had pars on nine out of the other 10 holes.
Following Rodriguez and Diaz were Danny Lapp (Trumansburg, NY/Charles O. Dickerson) who shot an 11 over par round of 82, Mike Winter (Hamilton Square, NJ/Notre Dame) who shot 13 over par for an 84 round, and David Powers (Glen Spey, NY/Eldred) who shot 15 over par finishing the round with an 86.
Regional host Texas leads the three-day event with a score of 277 (-7) while Ole Miss shot a 282 (-2), Oklahoma State shot a 287 (+3), and Arizona State, Iowa State, and North Carolina State each tied for fourth after shooting a 290 (+6) to round out the Top-5 teams. The Peacocks sit in 14th place with a score of 319.
This is the men's golf team's third trip in the last four years to the NCAA Division I Regional, last competing in the 2015 Connecticut Regional at The Course at Yale in New Haven, Connecticut and in 2014 at the programs first NCAA Men's Golf Regional in Sugar Grove, Illinois.
Saint Peter's will be paired with Wichita State and the individuals for the second round on Tuesday. The teams will tee off from the 10th tee starting at 9:50 a.m. led by Powers who will be the first Peacock to tee off. He will be followed by Winter (10:01 a.m.), Lapp (10:12 a.m.), Diaz (10:23 a.m.) and Rodriguez (10:34 a.m.).
