John Oxner Goes Undefeated on Birthday; Men's Tennis Drops Match to Fordham

BRONX, NY – Freshman, John Oxner celebrated his 19th birthday in style with an undefeated day, but unfortunately, the Saint Peter's University men's tennis team fell to Fordham University, 5-2. Hector Andres Jacome and Oxner were able to put the two points on the board for the Peacocks in singles and the duo also earned a doubles win in the match.

Doubles Results - Jacome and Oxner won at the top spot, 6-2, against Allen Thornes and Max Green. Sebastian Ferrer and Ignacio Tintore succumbed to Fabian Hansch Mauritzson and Lutwin de Macar, 1-6. Ivan Knezevic and Douglas Nover lost a tight 4-6 contest at No. 3 to Finn Kemper and Jeremy Chung.

Singles Result - Jacome needed three sets for the victory at No. 1 against Mauritzson, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Oxner, on his birthday, was able to win easily 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 against Thornes. Tintore and Knezevic battled after dropping the first set but ultimately lost in three sets to Green and Kemper at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Igor Khvorostian lost 4-6, 2-6 at No. 4 to de Macar. Nover lost a tough first set and ultimately the match 7-6(5), 6-1 at No. 6 against Alex Makatsaria.

Up Next - The team returns on the road to travel to MAAC foe Quinnipiac in Hamden, Connecticut. First serve is set for noon alongside the women's team.

Hector Andres Jacome on his day:
"Tennis is a tough sport where people can win or lose. In the third set, I played my game and especially gave all my heart to get the win!"

John Oxner on not dropping a set on his birthday:
"I'm really happy to get my first collegiate singles and doubles dual match victories, especially on the road. My serve saved me in the big moments and I was happy with my performance. I thought me and Andres were solid in doubles winning at No. 1. I think the team is growing every day and today was a step in the right direction."

Coach Scolamieri on the loss:

"The team's play was very encouraging since Fordham beat us 6-1 last year. Despite our 5-2 loss today, we lost two other matches that went three sets and we competed without our No. 2 player in the lineup. So as we thought, we now know that we have improved though we still have a ways to go. We won at the No. 1 and 2 positions playing junior transfer and freshman which has me excited about our potential and has helped to energize the team. Certainly, we are looking forward  to next weekend's match against perennial MAAC tennis power, Quinnipiac."
