Men's Tennis Results at the Navy Gold Invitational

ANNAPOLIS, MD - The Saint Peter's University men's tennis team finished their fall campaign collecting 14 wins, along with six wins by default or walkover, at the Navy Gold Invitational from October 27-29.

Singles Results - Of all the combined wins, the Peacocks tallied 11 on the singles court and nine on the doubles court. Hector Andres Jacome had to retire due to injury in his 11th Place match for the A (red) Singles Draw. John Oxner, similar to Jacome, had to deal with injury, forcing him to walkover his 13th Place Semifinal and 15th Place match for the same draw. In the B (orange) Singles Draw, Ignacio Tintore finished in 10th Place where he fell to Kyle Gower of Loyola. Piotr Sowinski got a bye to finish in 15th Place and he fell to Gower in the Consolation Quarterfinals. Ivan Knezevic finished the highest, fourth, for the team in the C (blue) Singles Draw. Igor Khvorostian defeated Evan Hine of Mount St. Mary to finish in seventh place. Gabriel Russotto fell to Amerigo Valenti of Binghamton to finish off the weekend in 14th Place. Sebastian Ferrer played in a Round Robin and totaled two wins against Peter Kelley and Rodrigo Moreno, both from Loyola.

Doubles Results - The men's tennis team represented well in the consolation draw for the A (green) Doubles Draw. Three of the four teams in the semifinals hailed from Saint Peter's. Unfortunately, Jacome and Oxner had to settle for a 17th Place tie as their match against Seth McNair of Navy and Rosen Naydenov of Longwood was not played. Same thing happened for the 19th Place match with both teams from Saint Peter's in Khvorostian and Russotto playing Knezevic and Sowinski. Ferrer and Tintore finished in 23rd place because they received a walkover due to a no show by their competitors, Andrew Hicks and Gabriel Pilones, from Navy.

Coach Scolamieri on the men's tennis team's fall campaign and expectations for the winter/spring:

"The  fall season was the best fall ever. All the returnees realize that the six newcomers have raised the daily competitive level amongst the players at practice and that those newcomers expect to get starting positions. So while I was apprehensive about bringing in six new players, it has turned out much better than I imagined from a competitive perspective and also from a teamwork perspective since the returnees have received them so graciously.

Based on our fall results, everyone also realizes, though we are improved, we still need to improve much more so there is considerable work to be done between now and mid Jan.

For the spring I expect that our lineup will become settled for our conference matches, that we will be much more competitive than in the last two years and that we will improve our standing in the conference."

Sophomore Ivan Knezevic on finishing the highest of the team in the C (blue) Singles Draw:

"It was really hard to play three matches in three sets but that was what we have been preparing for the whole season. It make me very happy to see that the hard word is paying off. Saint Peter's was the underdog in the tournament but I think that we showed everyone that this year we are a very serious competitor and I think that if we continue like this, we can make it really far in our conference."
