JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's tennis teams were swept by Loyola (MD) on Saturday, with the men's team falling by a close 5-2 margin and the women's team losing, 7-0. The men's team drops to 1-5 overall and the women's team drops to 0-8.
Men's Results - The Peacocks fought hard against the undefeated Greyhounds, but came up just short. Saint Peter's lost the doubles tandem point, 2-1. Hector Andres Jacome and Piotr Sowinski were the lone victors at No. 1 over Blest Jones and Matt Fitzmaurice, 6-4. The Peacocks lost No. 2 and No. 3 doubles in tiebreaks. John Oxner and Ignacio Tintore suffered a close defeat at No. 2, 7-6(6), against Reid Burch and C.J. Cash. Ivan Knezevic and Douglas Nover were defeated 7-6(2) at No. 3 by Brian Hoffarth and Kyle Gower. No. 1, Jacome, and No. 2, Sowinski, were the two Peacock winners on the day against Hoffarth and Jones, respectively. Jacome won 7-5, 6-1 and Sowinski won 6-4, 7-5. Oxner, Tintore, and Igor Khvorostian at No. 3, 4, and 5, all lost in three sets after winning the first set. Oxner lost to Burch, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Tintore lost a tough match to Cash, 6(4)-7, 6-4, 7-6(5). Khvorostian fell to Gower, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3. Gabriel Russotto lost to Matt Fitzmaurice at No. 6, 6-1, 6-3.
Women's Results - For the second time in as many days, the Peacocks were only able to suit up four student-athletes, putting the team down 2-0 in the match score. Saint Peter's defaulted No. 3 doubles, No. 5 singles, and No. 6 singles. All matches except for one resulted in the same set scoreline, 6-0. Stephanie Falcon and Azuri Hughes played No. 1 against Kateri Martin and Amanda Lanciano. Marta Ortega and Jennifer Guilherme fell against Lin Robertson and Abby Thornton at No. 2. Falcon and Martin played the top singles spot with Martin being victorious. Azuri Hughes was the lone Peacock to get a game as she fell to Lanciano at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0. Ortega was defeated by Robertson at No. 3. Guilherme lost to Thornton at No. 4.
Up Next - The women's tennis team returns to the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center Bubble on Sunday, February 11, for a match against Wagner College at 2 p.m. The men's tennis team is off until Thursday, February 15 when they host MAAC foe Marist with first serve at 3:30 p.m. in the Yanitelli Recreational Life Center Bubble.
