Softball Drops Series to Columbia University

MANHATTAN, NY - The Saint Peter's University softball team dropped a doubleheader to Ivy League member, Columbia University on Thursday afternoon. The Peacocks fell 12-4 in the first game and 9-1 in the second. The Peacock's overall record moves to 2-24 and their MAAC record is 1-10.

"We came out with so much fire and enthusiasm today as these girls believed in themselves today," said head coach Chris Stelma.

Game 1

Saint Peter's started Crystal Carlucci who pitched three innings. Carlucci and Sydney Ramsey combined to score four runs, including a home run by Carlucci in the loss.

In the bottom of the first, Columbia scored four runs, leading 4-0. In the top of the second Ramsey was walked to first base just before Carlucci hit a two-run homerun. The Peacocks finished the second inning two runs behind Columbia (4-2).

Top of the third, Carlucci scored for the Peacocks, making the score 4-3. At the bottom of the fourth the Peacocks gave up five runs as the Lions lead extended to 9-3.

Carlucci added a double, advancing Ramsey home to give the Peacocks another run in the top of the fifth, but in the bottom of the fifth the Lions scored four more runs to win the game 12-4.

"We had a real nice pitching performance from Alyssa Ruiz going six strong innings and giving up one run," said head coach Chris Stelma.

Game 2

The Peacocks started Ruiz who pitched 3.1 inning and threw one strikeout. Crystal Carlucci led the Peacocks with one run with an RBI from Georgia Verrastro.

The Peacocks lone run came in the top of the second inning when Verrastro earned an RBI single to right center that drove in Carlucci. The Peacocks were unable to record anymore runs as Wagner won the game 9-1.

"The fire and enthusiasm poured out onto the field today," said Stelma "I expect them to coming out ready to do some damage next week."

Next up

The Peacocks will face Coppin St. in a doubleheader matchup on April 19th. The first game will start promptly at 2pm.

Top of the third the Carlucci scored for the Peacocks on a unearned run. Bottom of the fourth the Peacocks gave up five runs letting the Lions lead 9-2.

Ramsey walked to first in top of the fifth then scored after Carlucci hit a 2B advancing Ramsey home.

Bottom of the fifth the Lions scored four more runs to win the game 12-4.
