BALTIMORE, MD - The Saint Peter's University softball team split their midweek doubleheader with Coppin St. on Wednesday, dropping the first game 12-9 and winning the second 7-4. The Peacock's overall record moves to 3-25 after the 1-1 day.
"These girls have worked so hard so it's nice for them to notch another one in the win column," said head coach Chris Stelma.
Saint Peter's started Alyssa Ruiz who pitched 2.2 innings. Samantha Storms led the Peacocks as she totaled four RBI's and two runs including the a homerun. Georgia Verrastro followed with three RBI's and one run.
In the top of the first, Storms doubled to right center for the Peacocks advancing Harley Connors and Alina Guevara to home base, giving the Peacocks a 2-0 lead. Coppin State answered in the bottom of the first with two runs of its own, tying the score 2-2.
In the bottom of the second inning, Coppin St. added another run, leading the Peacocks 3-2. Saint Peter's was unable to score in the top of the third and fell behind the Eagles as they added a seven run bottom of the third, taking a commanding 10-2 lead.
Saint Peter's responded in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Sydney Ramsey on first, Storms on second, and Brianna Hutchinson on third, Verrastro singled to right center for an RBI, as Hutchinson scored. Next, Shamar Sanchez reached on a fielder's choice allowing, Storms to score from third base. Saint Peter's ended the fourth inning behind 10-4.
The Peacocks came away with three runs in the top of the fifth with a double from Hutchinson leading to Nicole Feoli's score. Shortly after, Storms hit a two-run homerun improving the deficit to 10-7.
Coppin St. tallied two runs to lead the Peacocks 12-7 heading into the final stanza. Saint Peter's was able to add two more runs as Verrastro singled to center field allowing Candice Koch and Ramsey to score. The Eagles won the first game 12-9.
The Peacocks started Tiffani Lambert who pitched 2.1 innings. Hutchinson led the Peacocks with one RBI and four runs. Storms led the squad with four RBI's on three hits.
The Peacocks took the advantage in the top of the first as Storms singled and advanced to second allowing Hutchinson to score.
It wasn't until top of the third the Peacocks tallied another run with Ramsey hitting the RBI single up the middle scoring Hutchinson.
Coppin St. found the equalizer, adding two runs in the third, evening the score at 2-2.
Saint Peter's was able to score in the top of the fifth from Guevara's single to right field advancing Hutchinson across the home plate for the third time, taking a lead over the Eagles 3-2. But Coppin St. replied with one run tying the score 3-3 again in the bottom of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, the Peacocks took the lead for the final time beginning with a Koch double to second. Connors walked and Nicole Feoli singled just before Hutchinson reached first on a pitching error. Koch then scored for the Peacocks while Feoli advanced to second and Connors advanced to third. Storms then cleared the bases after she doubled to left corner allowing Hutchinson, Feoli and Connors to score. The Peacocks led the Eagles 7-2 after the four run inning.
Coppin St. was only able to score one run in the bottom of the sixth dropping to Saint Peter's 7-4.
"We won game two behind a full staff effort of Tiffani Lambert, Syd Ramsey and Alyssa Ruiz combined in the effort," said Stelma. "Bree Hutchinson, Sam Storms and Syd Ramsey were a combined 11 for 19."
The Peacocks will host Robert Morris in a doubleheader at Jaroschak Field on April 21. The first game will start promptly at 12pm.
