Softball Suffers a Heartbreaking 8-5 Defeat to Hartford in Coppin State Eagles Classic

BALTIMORE, MD – The Saint Peter's softball team squandered a 5-2 lead, giving up a combined six runs in the fifth and sixth innings, leading to an 8-5 loss to Hartford on Saturday afternoon in Baltimore, MD at the Coppin State Eagles Classic.


"We had a strong first outing today," said head coach Chris Stelma. "We got a great performance from Mary Mastriani in the circle and some key hits. The girls played a very exciting brand of ball and we expect a lot of great things to come! It's nice to be underway and we'll be back to work tomorrow."


In the second inning, the Peacocks jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Barbara Verrastro (Scott Township, PA / Lackawanna College) got the Peacocks on the board with an RBI double to left field that sent Michelle Kugelmann (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic) across home plate from second base. Barbara's younger sister, Georgia Verrastro (Middletown, NJ / Red Bank Catholic), followed with a bunt that advanced her sibling to third, who then scored on a throwing error by the Hartford infielder. Two batters later, Shamar Sanchez (Levittown, NY / Island Trees) reached on a throwing error by the same Hartford infielder, allowing G. Verrastro to score the unearned run.


Hartford responded with a two-run, bottom of the second inning, to cut the Peacock lead to 3-2.


The Peacocks added one run in the third and one in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-2. In the third, pinch runner, Taylor White (Arlington, VA / Monroe College) scored from third following Harley Connors' (La Vernia, TX / William Mason) RBI single to left. The fifth inning run came by way of Brianna Hutchinson's (Lebanon, OH / Lebanon) RBI single up the middle that scored Nicole Feoli (Burlington Township, NJ / Burlington).


In the fifth and sixth innings, Hartford recorded a total of 10 hits and scored six runs, giving them a late 8-5 lead over the Peacock with just one inning left. Over the two innings, the Peacocks also recorded an error which led to one of the six runs.


With three outs remaining, the Peacocks only got one player on base, before the final outs were recorded.


Feoli hit 2-for-4, scoring one run and the Verrastro sisters combined to go 2-for-6 with two runs and an RBI. Alina Guevara (Agoura Hills, CA / Agoura Hills) also went 2-for-3 for the Peacocks at the plate.


Right-handed starting pitcher Mary Mastriani (Sparta, NJ / County College of Morris) pitched 4.2 innings on the mound for the Peacocks. In relief, freshman righty Taylor Lewis (Mason, OH / Lebanon) went 1.0 innings, giving up four runs and the lead. She was credited with the loss.


The Peacocks fall to 0-1 on the season and will continue play tomorrow with a double-header against MAAC rival Rider and tournament host Coppin State.
