JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's softball team dropped a doubleheader to non-conference opponent Wagner on Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks dropped the first game, 9-0 and the second game, 9-6.
"We got the bats going in the second game today, it took some real quality at bats and made some big plays on defense," said head coach Chris Stelma. "My hope is that we hit a nice stride today to bring into the weekend."
The Peacocks started Barbara Verrastro who pitched four innings. Brianna Hutchinson led the team, logging a stolen base for the Peacocks. The Peacocks were unable to score and the Seahawks won the game 9-0.
Wagner led the Peacocks 3-0 until the bottom of the first when the Peacocks scored after Ramirez doubled to centerfield sending Georgia Verrastro home. Right after, Nicole Feoli doubled to right field and Ramirez took off to score the second run and the Peacocks trailed the Seahawks 3-2.
In the bottom of the third, the Peacocks came back to score two runs, putting them ahead 4-3. Ramirez doubled to center field and advanced Shamar Sanchez home to score, 3-3. Later, Tiffani Lambert was walked to first base and Ramirez ran the straight away to score and give the Peacocks a 4-3 edge.
In the top of the fourth, Wagner was able to retake the lead after scoring two runs, leading 6-4. The Peacocks kept the fight in the bottom of the fourth as Sanchez singled to advanced Georgia Verrastro to second and send Harley Connors home to score. In the next at-bat, Natasha Solano was walked to first and Sanchez advanced to second and Georgia Verrastro scored to tie the game at 6-6.
It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Seahawks scored again. The Peacocks were unable to score in the bottom of the sixth and Wagner won the game 9-6.
The Peacocks will return to conference play on Saturday, April 14 at Rider. The team is set to start the doubleheader at 12 p.m.
