Softball Ends Drought with a Sweep Against UMES

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's softball team claimed its first doubleheader sweep of the season against non-conference opponent UMES on Wednesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. The Peacocks won the first game 2-0 and the second game, 8-0.

 

"Two real nice wins today," said head coach Chris Stelma. "We hit the ball hard and got great pitching all day."

 

Game 1

Sydney Ramsey, pitched a complete game shutout, completing five strikeouts and seven hits. Brianna Hutchinson led the team with a home run and a RBI.

 

The Peacocks didn't score until the bottom of the fourth inning. Barbara Verrastro singled to center field getting on first base. Alina Guevara then doubled and advanced Barbara Verrastro home for the first score. With two outs on the board, Hutchinson stepped up to the plate and hit a solo homer to center field extending the Peacocks' lead to 2-0.

 

Game 2

The Peacocks finished off UMES in five innings of work. Mary Mastriani, who allowed three hits after facing 17 batters got the start. Theamaris Ramirez led the team with two home runs, four RBIs. Harley Connors followed with a triple, a stolen base and two runs, while Barbara Verrastro added one run, and three RBIs.

 

In the bottom of the first Connors tripled to right center and Ramirez followed with a homer to left field for the two-run bomb.

 

Connors kept the energy in the bottom of the third as she singled to center field, stole second and got on third after an error by UMES. Ramirez then hit a sacrifice fly and Connors ran through home base to count the Peacocks third run. With two on, Barbara Verrastro hit a homer to center field pushing the lead up to 6-0. Later in the inning, Tiffani Lambert stepped up to bat and hit her first career homer to center field making it a 7-0 game.

 

In the bottom of the fourth with two outs, Ramirez hit her second homer of the game giving Saint Peter's the 8-0 nod. In the top of the fifth, the Peacocks closed out the game with a 1-2-3 inning, and won the game 8-0.

 

"I want to thank our Alumni who came out as well as SAAC for having the tailgate and REC for routing the Poker Run to the field," said Stelma "The girls love the excitement and support!"


Next Up

The Peacocks will return back to conference play and host Canisius on Saturday, April 21. The doubleheader will begin at 2 p.m.
