JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's softball team saluted seniors, Nicole Feoli and Shamar Sanchez in Sundays matchup against Niagara during the annual senior day ceremony. Unfortunately, the Peacocks fell short in the doubleheader, falling 3-2 in 10 innings, and 8-0 in the second game.
"We had a nice day paying tribute to Seniors Nicole Feoli and Shamar Sanchez," said head coach Chris Stelma. "Senior Day is always a bittersweet day, I hope the seniors and their families had a nice day."
Barbara Verrastro pitched the full 10 innings for the Peacocks, faced 40 batters and completed four strikeouts. Feoli led the team with one run and one RBI. Harley Connors tallied an RBI and stolen base, Schieler Collins scored a run, and Georgia Verrastro completed two stolen bases.
The two teams did not score until the third inning when the Purple Eagles scored two runs to take the lead over the Peacocks, 2-0. The Jersey City team quickly answered in the bottom of the third after Collins hit a single and Feoli hit a triple to center field to score. Next, Connors hit an RBI single and Feoli made it home to tie the game at 2-2.
The teams battled in a pitcher's duel the rest of the way needing extra inning to determine a winner. The Peacocks opportunity came in the eighth following Collins making it on after being hit by a pitch. G. Verrastro entered the game to pinch run and stole second putting her in position to score the game-winning run with no outs on the board. Before Verrastro could cross home plate, the next three out of four Peacocks were retired, extending the game another inning. In the top of the 10th, Niagara scored to break the tie and win the game 3-2.
"We had a great game in game one with a 10 inning brilliant performance by Barbara Verrastro, said Stelma.
The Peacocks were unable to score and Niagara won the game 8-0.
The Peacocks will stay at home and host non-conference opponent Coppin St. on Wednesday April 25. The double header is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
