WEST LONG BRANCH, NJ – The men's swim team's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) record improved to 3-0 on the season after the Peacocks defeated hOURglass Rival Monmouth on Saturday afternoon in the Richard E. Steadman Natatorium in West Long Branch. The women's fell to both Monmouth and LIU Brooklyn at the women's tri-meet.
"The men's team was up against an improving Monmouth squad, and had to earn a really exciting victory today," said head coach Mark Kretzer. "I had some of them racing in events they haven't done often this year, which posed an interesting challenge today. I am excited how they rallied to continue our momentum through our dual meet season."
The men's team beat Monmouth, 151.50-110.50, improving their overall record to 7-2 on the season while staying perfect in the MAAC. The men earned top finishes in the 200 medley relay, the 1000 free (Thomas Calloni), the 200 free (Daniel Betts), 50 backstroke (Michael Spark), 50 breaststroke (Igal Oren), 100 free (Joshua Varrie), 100 backstroke (Michael Spark), 100 breaststroke (Igal Oren), 500 free (Andrew Galarza), 200 IM (Igal Oren), and the 400 free relay.
Kretzer on the men's performance, "junior Dan Betts won the 200 freestyle in convincing fashion, posting an in season best time in the process. He really comes alive this time of year and is an excellent role model to the large group of freshmen on how prepared you need to be going into the MAAC championships. Sophomore Michael Spark dominated three straight times in the backstroke events, posting in season best times as well. Mike really knows how to get himself motivated in these big rivalry meets and it rubs off on the rest of the team."
"On the women's side, the team has continued to grow from meet to meet," said Kretzer. "Senior Karen Castaneda continues to carry the team on her back with an individual victory in the 200 free, while freshman Lindsey Hanger continues to impress in the sprint freestyle and butterfly events. The continued improvement of the women's team will certainly help this spring when we finalize our 2018 recruiting class."
The men's and women's swim teams return to Jersey City for their senior day and alumni meets on Sunday, January 21. The Peacocks will host St. Francis Brooklyn with the first race set to start at 1:30 p.m.
