Career-Highs by Hughes and Pero Propel Women's Basketball in Win Against Niagara

JERSEY CITY, NJ - Talah Hughes, Janelle Mullen and Zoe Pero combined for 55 points, in a 78-66 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) home win against Niagara University on Friday afternoon. Hughes scored 21 points and Pero scored 18 points (both career highs), while Mullen added 16 points to help the Peacocks improve to 2-1 in MAAC play. This is the first time Saint Peter's has started 2-1 in conference play under head coach Pat Coyle.

"I thought we played great, we got stops when we needed to get stops," said head coach Pat Coyle. "Their (Niagara) a tough matchup and I thought we got terrific efforts from the starters and off the bench."

Niagara started off the game leading 5-0 before the Peacocks came back to tie the game at eight, midway through the first quarter. The Peacocks picked up the pace as freshman Pero, posted 12 points, to put the team back in the game. The Peacocks were down 27-30 late in the second quarter when the sophomore Mullen, hit a buzzer beating three-point shot to tie the score at 30-30 and send the teams into the locker knotted up.

The Purple Eagles pulled away early in the third quarter before the Peacocks came back to tie the contest at 46-46. Saint Peter's fell behind again until Alyssa Velles hit two consecutive three-point shots to put the Peacocks two points behind the Purple Eagles at 54-52. 

The Peacocks carried their momentum into the fourth quarter as Mullen added a three-pointer to put the squad back in the lead 55-54. The Peacocks did not let up as they continued to stay in the lead. The Peacocks would hold the Purple Eagles to just nine points in the fourth quarter before taking the win 78-66.

Talah Hughes and Zoe Pero added eight rebounds each while Sajanna Bethea and Alyssa Velles posted nine points apiece. 

As a team, the Peacocks shot 45 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line. Pero led the Peacocks shooting 10-11 from the free throw line on the evening.

Victoria Rampado led the Purple Eagles with 22 points and 13 rebounds. 

Next up.. Saint Peter's will head to Connecticut to play in a MAAC  rematch against Quinnipiac on Jan. 2. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 7pm. In the conference opener on Dec. 1 the Peacocks fell to the Bobcats 84-51.
