JERSEY CITY, NJ - Freshman, Zoe Pero led the women's basketball team with 14 points as the Peacocks fell to Iona College 66-58, Thursday night in the Yanitelli Center. Saint Peter's drops to an overall record of 3-11 and 2-3 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
"Iona came out with more energy defensively and more energy on the boards," said assistant coach Phyllis Mangina. "We are in a positive direction, this is just a tough loss for us."
The Peacocks got off to a slow start as they trailed the Gaels 13-4 halfway into the quarter. Iona kept the strong lead ending the quarter 25-17.
A ten-point deficit at 27-17 early in the second quarter kept the Peacocks from closing in on the Gaels. Reserves, Alyssa Velles and Pero put the the Peacocks within six, 39-33 just before the halftime mark.
A lineup change, defensively, held the Gaels to nine points in the third quarter. Velles posted a three followed by two jump shots from Pero to put the team one point behind Iona, 50-49. The Peacocks were unable to contain their momentum as the Gaels finished the game 66-58.
Leader for the Gaels was Philecia Atkins-Gilmore with 18 points and Alexis Lewis with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
The Peacocks will head back on the road to face hOURglass rival Monmouth for the first time this season on Saturday Jan. 7. Tipoff is scheduled to start at 3pm.
