Niagara Edges Women's Basketball 71-62

NIAGARA UNIV., NY - Sajanna Bethea posted a double-double in a 71-63 loss against Niagara  on Saturday afternoon in the Gallagher Center. Bethea posted 18 points and 11 rebounds while freshman guard, Sammy Lochner matched her career-high of 13 points. Saint Peter's drops to an overall record of 3-24, and 2-15 MAAC record.

"I thought we played well in the first half," said head coach Pat Coyle. "Second half we settled for jumpers instead of getting to the rim."

The Peacocks got off to a good start as they notched a five-point lead, 12-7 half way through the first quarter. The Peacocks posted two more points before Niagara tied the game at 14-14 with under three minutes. Saint Peter's finished the quarter in the lead 18-17.

The contest stayed competitive as both teams battled back and forth tying the score twice at 19 and 22. The Purple then jumped into the lead at 26-23, followed by m Bethea putting the Peacocks one point behind the Purple Eagles at 26-25. Niagara added a three-pointer to take a four-point lead at 29-25. The Peacocks hustled to stay within two points behind the Purple Eagles as the game went on. Saint Peter's guard, Lochner,  hit a three-point jump shot to help the Peacocks lead at the half 33-32.

In the the third quarter the Peacocks quickly jumped to a 38-34 lead. Niagra then went on a 5-0 run to gain a one-point lead at 39-38. The Peacocks stayed in the game as efforts from Bethea, Lochner, Talah Hughes, and Brianna Tarabocchia, and Alyssa Velles combining for 14 points scored in the third quarter. The Peacocks trailed the Purple Eagles 52-47 at the  end of the third quarter.

In the fourth quarter the Peacocks fought to catch Niagara falling behind 56-50 a little over three minutes into the quarter. Niagara kept the strong lead advancing to a 10-point lead at 65-55 in the last two minutes of the quarter. The Purple were unable to catch up the Purple Eagles and Niagara finished the game with a 71-62 win.

Victoria Rampado led Niagara posting 15 points and 11 rebounds while Kharysma added 14 points.

The Peacocks will travel to New Rochelle, NY to take on the Iona Gaels on Wednesday, February 22. Tipoff is scheduled to start promptly at 7pm.
