NEW ROCHELLE, NY - Sajanna Bethea and Zoe Pero combined for 37 points in a tough loss against Iona, 51-50, Wednesday night in the Hynes Athletics Center. Sajanna Bethea posted 19 points while Zoe Pero matched her season high of 18 points.
"I'm proud of the effort we had tonight," said head coach Pat Coyle. "Sajanna and Zoe were terrific and did a lot of great things."
The Peacocks got off to a good start leading 6-0 two minutes into the first quarter. Saint Peter's jumped to a seven point lead at 12-5 before finishing the quarter with a 13-7 advantage.
In the second quarter the Peacocks continued to play hard as freshman forward, Pero, added six points to the board while Bethea added four points. The Peacocks led 17-13 until the Gaels added three points to the board to close the gap to one point at 17-16. A jump shot by Pero and three-pointer by Alyssa Velles put Saint Peter's in a six-point lead (22-16). Iona added seven more points before Saint Peter's led at the half 26-23.
In the third quarter Bethea and Pero combined for 15 points in the quarter shooting 42.9 percent from the field. Halfway through the quarter the Peacocks jumped to a 10 point lead with a 37-27 edge. The Peacocks held the the Gaels to five more points as they led at the end of the quarter 41-32.
The Gaels opened up the final quarter on a 12-0 run, taking their first lead of the night at 44-41. The Peacocks ended the scoring slump and would tie the game at 44 each. Both teams played hard as they went shot for shot. The Peacocks fell behind one point 49-48 until Bethea added a jump shot to put the Peacocks in the lead 50-49. With five seconds to go the Gaels stole the win 51-50 with a three-point shot from senior guard, Marina Lizarazu.
Senior guard, Alexis Lewis, led Iona posting 25 points and 10 rebounds.
Next up the Peacocks will finish the regular season at home on Friday against Siena. Tipoff will start promptly at 7pm in the Yanitelli Center.
