Women’s Basketball Selected 11th in MAAC Preseason Poll

EDISON, NJ – The Saint Peter's women's basketball team has been picked 11th in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, announced during the annual MAAC Preseason Awards Show on ESPN3, Tuesday night.

Saint Peter's finished 3-27 overall and 2-18 in conference play in 2016-17. The Peacocks picked up an upset win at Marist last season, earning a win in Poughkeepsie over the MAAC powerhouse team for the first time since 2002. Saint Peter's also earned a conference win against Niagara a year ago, leading to a 2-1 MAAC start, the best league start under head coach Pat Coyle.

The Peacocks return three starters and nine letterwinners from last year's team. 84.6 percent of the team's scoring are back from a season ago, led by senior Talah Hughes who was the only Peacock to play and start in all 30 games a year ago. Hughes was the team leader in scoring, steals, and blocks. She averaged 12.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 1.0 steals per game during the 2016-17 campaign. Joining Hughes as the returning starters are classmate Samantha Meier and sophomore Sammy Lochner. Meier made starts in 25 games, and averaged 2.5 points and 3.8 rebounds per outing. As a true freshman last season, Lochner served as the teams point guard, leading the squad with 3.0 assists per game and averaging 5.7 points per outing. The Peacocks also return senior Sajanna Bethea and sophomore Zoe Pero as key returners. Bethea, a former All-MAAC selection, was limited last year due to injuries. Despite battling injuries, Bethea still finished second on the team in scoring with her 9.6 points per game average and she led the team in rebounding with 6.0 boards per contest. Pero earned MAAC All-Rookie team honors a season ago after recording 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds. Key reserves that come back in 2017-18 are senior Alyssa Velles, junior Breana Spencer, and sophomores Brianna Tarabocchia and Ashlie Howell. Newcomer's joining the squad includes Haley Dalonzo, Precious Featherson, D'Aviyon Magazine, Anna Maguire, and Dajiah Martin.

The Peacocks open up the 2017-18 season at Seton Hall on November 10. The first home game of the season for the squad will be two days later, on November 12 against Lafayette at 1pm.
