BROOKLYN, NY - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to LIU Brooklyn 57-46, Tuesday night at the Steinberg Wellness Center. Senior Forward, Talah Hughes, recorded a double-double with team-highs 12 points and 11 rebounds.
"The effort on the glass on the offensive end tonight was terrific; we will look more into converting half of those possessions into scores," said head coach Pat Coyle. "Talah at times was very good. We missed her in the paint which we need to correct before Sunday's game."
Following Hughes was shooting guard, Alyssa Velles with nine points. Sophomore, Zoe Pero had eight points and six rebounds, Sajanna Bethea added seven points and six rebounds and freshman guard, D'Aviyon Magazine added five points.
The Peacocks came out with an early 7-4 lead after a three pointer from Velles followed by a jump shot and two free throws by Hughes. The score evened twice at 7-7 and 12-12 before the Blackbirds took the lead 14-12 right before the media timeout. The Peacocks came back to take the lead by one point at 15-14 after a free throw from Hughes, and a layup from Bethea. LIU Brooklyn came back with a quick three followed by two free throws to retake the lead (20-15). Magazine and Pero combined for the next six points and the Blackbirds posted a three pointer leading the Peacocks 23-21 at the end of the first quarter.
It wasn't until the 7:02 mark that either team scored in the second quarter. An aggressive play from Hughes put her on the line where she hit one of the two, putting the Peacocks down by one at 23-22. The game eventually tied up again at 26 all, before the Peacocks trailed the Blackbirds 30-28 at halftime.
After halftime, the Peacocks continued to play hard edging the Blackbirds by one, 35-34, with just under five minutes on the clock. Pero made two free throws to extend the Peacock's lead to 37-34. The Blackbirds added three points to even the score before Velles posted back to back three's to put the Peacocks in the lead ending the third quarter 43-37.
In the fourth quarter, the Blackbirds outscored the Peacocks 20-3, and the LIU Brooklyn went on to win the game 57-46.
Leading the Blackbirds were Denisha Petty-Evans with 18 points, Jeydah Johnson with 17 points, Drew Winter with 12 points and DeAngelique Waithe with 12 rebounds.
"We need others to step up rebounding, making shots and guarding; it has to be a collective effort," said Coyle. "We will look at the game film, make our adjustments and be ready for Sunday night."
The women's basketball team will continue play on the road as they face New Jersey neighbor, NJIT, on Sunday, November 19. The game is scheduled to start at 7pm at the Wellness and Events Center.
