JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team was edged by St. Francis Brooklyn, 64-49, on Thursday night in the Yanitelli Center. Alyssa Velles led the Peacocks with 11 points while Dajiah Martin and Sajanna Bethea led the team with seven rebounds each.
The Peacocks got off to a good start as they led the Terriers 5-0 with a layup by Bethea and a three by Velles. The Terriers gained five points and the Peacocks extended their lead with four points from Martin, followed by back to back threes from Velles, leading to a 13-5 advantage. St. Francis managed to cut the deficit and take the lead as they closed out the quarter on a 12-0 run to take the lead at 17-13.
In the second quarter, the Terriers added to their lead, but Saint Peters closed in on St. Francis as they posted four points coming by way of layups by Bethea and Sammy Lochner, putting Saint Peter's down, 19-17. St. Francis extended the gap, before a layup by Ashlie Howell and a three pointer from Lochner cut the deficit to 26-22. Saint Peter's added two points and the Terriers went on to lead 30-24 at the break.
After the half, Martin added the Peacock's first six points before the media timeout as the Peacocks trailed the Terrier 37-30. Bethea and Zoe Pero scored two points each, while the Terriers added nine points at the end of the quarter, leading 49-34.
In the final quarter, the Peacocks got to a 10 point deficit spearheaded by three pointers from Lochner and Talah Hughes, getting to 53-43. Despite getting to within 10 points, St. Francis finished the night on a 10-6 run, holding on to defeat the Peacocks, 63-49.
The Peacocks remain off for a week, with the team next hosting Umass Lowell in the Yanitelli Center, next Thursday on December 7, at 7pm.
