JERSEY CITY, NJ- The Saint Peter's women's basketball team dropped a nonconference contest to UMass Lowell, 66-60, on Thursday night in the Yanitelli Center. Power forward, Zoe Pero, led the team in points and rebounds with her first double-double of the season, scoring 13 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
Freshman forward, Dajiah Martin, followed Pero with a career high of 10 points. D'Aviyon Magazine totaled nine points, and Sajanna Bethea, Talah Hughes, Alyssa Velles and Sammy Lochner added six points each.
Just after tip-off, the Peacocks set the tone as they jumped out to a nine point lead of 11-2 in less than three minutes. The Peacocks allowed the River Hawks four points as they gained five extending the lead to double digits at 16-6 with two free throws by Martin and a three-pointer from Magazine. The River Hawks started to come back from the deficit, as they scored four more points trailing the Peacocks 16-10. Four straight points by Pero eventually put the Peacocks back up by nine points, leading 20-11 from Pero's layup and two free throws. Saint Peter's ended the quarter leading 23-16.
In the second quarter, the River Hawks opened on a 9-2 run and evened the score at 25. The Peacocks jumped back into the lead, 30-29, after a layup by Martin. Saint Peter's held the River Hawks to two points and added six points leading at the half, 36-31, with one jumper from Pero and two from Lochner.
After the break, the game got close again, tying up at 41 and again at 44. The River Hawks then took a the lead at 47-44. Two jumpers from Sam Meier and a free throw from Hughes tied the game for the Peacocks at 49. The Peacocks ended the third quarter in the lead, 53-49 when Pero and Bethea closed out the quarter with a pair of jump shots.
In the final quarter, the Peacocks scored the first four points and continued to lead, 57-49 with layups from Bethea and Martin. The River Hawks started to close in the Peacocks as they fell behind by one point, trailing Saint Peter's, 60-59. The River Hawks scored the game's final seven points, stealing the game 66-60 from the Peacocks.
Leading the River Hawks were Kayla Gibbs with 17 points, Brianna Rudolph with 14 points and Paula Lopez with 10 points.
Up next, the Peacocks will take a trip to face the University of Massachusetts on Sunday. Tip-off will begin at 2pm.
