Women's Basketball Fall to UMass on Sunday

AMHERST, MA - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to UMass, 81-65 on Sunday afternoon in the Mullins Center. Talah Hughes led the Peacocks with 15 points and Alyssa Velles posted 14 points and led the team with six rebounds.

"In the first half, we did a great job of penetrating their zone and got the looks we wanted," said head coach Pat Coyle. "In the second half, we made a few mistakes defensively that hurt us but overall played like what we are capable of on a daily basis."

Zoe Pero followed Hughes and Velles with eight points, while Sam Meier and D'Aviyon Magazine posted six points each. Sammy Lochner added five points and four assists and Sajanna Bethea posted four points, five rebounds and four assists.

 Bethea became the 20th Peacock all-time to surpass the 1,000 career point mark in her collegiate career, with the first basket of the game, putting the peacocks in the lead 2-0. The game picked up as the Minutemen added eight points with a counter from Velles adding back to back three pointers to even the score at 8-8. UMass retook the lead at 11-8 after adding three points, but Magazine knocked down a three to tie the game again at 11. The Peacocks posted four more points with two jump shots from Meier but the Minutemen ended the first quarter in the lead 18-15.

In the second quarter, the Peacocks trailed, 21-19, after layups from Pero and Ashlie Howell. The Peacocks stayed within one-point of UMass, going shot for shot trailing 25-24, 31-30, and then 34-33 before freshman, Hailey Dalonzo hit a three pointer with an assist from Lochner to put the Peacocks in the lead, 36-34 to end the half. 

The Minutemen opened the half on a 10-3 run, taking the 44-39, lead over the Peacocks. Offensive efforts from Velles and Pero, produced nine points in the quarter, however the Minutemen took a nine point lead into the final quarter of the day, leading 57-48. 

In the final quarter, the Minutemen led the Peacocks, 63-50 after the first two minutes of the quarter. The Peacocks deficit to the Minutemen grew to, 70-55 and then 75-60 with 2:53 left on the clock. The Minutemen outscored the Peacocks, 6-5, over the final two minutes and went on to defeat the Peacocks, 81-65.

The Peacocks will return home on Tuesday, December 12, when the team host Yale at 7pm in the Yanitelli Center.
