Sajanna Bethea Leads Women's Basketball with Double-Double Against Rider
JERSEY CITY, NJ -  The Saint Peter's women's basketball team dropped its conference contest to hOURglass rival, Rider, 57-52 on Tuesday night. Sajanna Bethea led the Peacocks with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and four steals.
 
Talah Hughes followed Bethea with nine points and seven rebounds. Alyssa Velles added six points and D'Aviyon Magazine led the team completing four assists.
 
After the tip-off, the Broncs led 6-0, which led the Peacocks to a 30 second timeout. Right after the timeout, Rider scored a layup and completed the three-point play after Talah Hughes issued a foul, leading to a 9-0 deficit for Saint Peter's. D'Aviyon Magazine scored a left handed layup to end the Peacock drought, and get the team on the board. After Haley Dalonzo connected on two free throws, Rider came back to hit a three to extend their lead to 12-4. Saint Peter's cut the deficit to 12-7 when Hughes responded with a three pointer of her own. Bethea completed a three-point play putting the Peacocks two points behind, ending the quarter at, 12-10. The Peacocks outscored the Broncs, 10-3 over the final 3:33 after the slow start.  
 
Zoe Pero tied the game at 12 for the Peacocks with an up and under layup. Saint Peter's then went on to take the lead at 14-12 after Hughes hit a baseline jumper. Rider added five straight points to regain the lead at 17-14. Brianna Tarabocchia had a made layup, and cut the deficit for the Peacocks to 17-16, but the Broncs extended their lead to 21-16, and Bethea made a putback layup off an offensive rebound, to end the half with the score of 21-18. 
 
After the break, Rider posted two points to lead the Peacocks 23-18. Bethea dropped in a layup to close the score for the Peacocks to 23-20. Rider made a three pointer extending the lead to 26-20 and Bethea answered with a layup for the Peacocks, putting the deficit back to four points. Rider gained three points and the Peacocks trailed 29-24 after another layup from Bethea. The Broncs shot a jumper and Dajiah Martin layed two points in for the Peacocks with an assist from Bethea, keeping Saint Peter's close at 31-26. The Broncs increased their lead to 41-31 forcing the Peacocks into a timeout after a 10-5 run. Hughes made a bucket, followed by a jumper from Bethea which led to Saint Peter's cutting the game to a score of 41-35. Saint Peter's added two points with free throws from Pero to end the quarter behind, 41-37. Bethea was the offensive force for Saint Peter's in the quarter, scoring 10 of the team's 19 points.
 
In the final quarter, Rider made the first basket, but Bethea responded with a three, making it 43-40. Saint Peter's got within two points (43-41) after one free throw by Bethea. Before the Peacocks could take the lead or tie the game up again, Rider then pushed the lead to 47-41. Bethea made a layup to cut the Saint Peter's deficit to 47-43, but Rider shot a heartbreaking three pointer, which made the contest, 50-43. Alyssa Velles hit a three to cut the score to 52-46 for the Peacocks and Bethea hit two free throws for the, getting to 52-48. Rider went up, 54-48 with under one minute remaining but the Peacocks continued to fight. Bethea then added one point as the Peacocks trailed 54-49 with 35.1 seconds left. Velles knocked down a three pointer and Saint Peter's was down 55-52 with 14.6 seconds left, only to see Rider make two free throws, and win the game 57-52.
 
The Peacocks will host the Marist Red Foxes on Thursday, January 4. Tip is set for 7pm.
