JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team fell to Marist, 86-53 on Thursday night in the Yanitelli Center. Alyssa Velles led the team with 13 points.
Talah Hughes followed Velles with eight points, Dajiah Martin posted six points and Haley Dalonzo added five points. Samantha Meier and Zoe Pero added four points each while Ashlie Howell posted the team's high of seven rebounds.
Maura Fitzpatrick led Marist with 20 points. Grace Vander-Weide followed with 17 points, Alana Gilmer posted 14 points and Rebekah Hand added 12 points.
Hughes opened up the scoring for the Peacocks, knocking down a jumper in the first few seconds and D'Aviyon Magazine followed with a three for the Peacocks to lead 5-0. Marist responded with a quick turn around as they scored thirteen points to lead the Peacocks 13-5. An offensive rebound from Sajanna Bethea led to a layup, helping the Peacocks to close in at, 13-7. Haley Dalonzo then stole the ball for the Peacocks adding two points to bring the game to within five, 10-15. Martin made a free throw to end the quarter and the Peacocks trailed the Red Foxes 18-11.
The Peacocks kept the energy going as Howell made a free throw and Dalonzo shot a short jumper (20-14). Marist scored three points before Meier knocked down a jumper for the Peacocks, who trailed 23-16. As Marist extended their lead, the Peacocks fought to catch up as Lochner and Howell counted a layup each, 35-20. Velles shot a three, and Howell posted two points and the Peacocks ended the half trailing 25-38.
Velles led the team with 10 of her 13 points coming after the break, and the Peacocks averaged 37.5 percent from the field. The Peacocks totaled 28 points in the second half and the Red Foxes posted 45 points to defeat the Peacocks 86-53.
The Peacocks will end their three-game home streak on Friday, January 26 as they host the Monmouth Hawks in the Yanitelli Center at 7 p.m.
