ALBANY, NY - The Saint Peter's women's basketball team's season concluded in the first round of the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship on Thursday afternoon in Albany, NY at the Times Union Center. The No. 11 Peacocks fell to No. 6 Niagara University, 60-48.
Zoe Pero led the Peacocks with 14 points and two blocks while Alyssa Velles scored 12 points in her final game as a Peacock. Sajanna Bethea scored six points and grabbed a team-high 12 rebounds, and Talah Hughes posted two points, two rebounds and a block as both of them closed out their Saint Peter's careers as well.
The Peacocks forced two Niagara turnovers on the first two possessions leading to back-to-back jumpers by Pero putting Saint Peter's up 4-0. The lead extended to 6-2 following a layup by Dajiah Martin. Niagara came back to take a 7-6 lead, but the Peacock got back out in front after Velles knocked down a 3-pointer to put the Peacocks ahead 11-10. Niagara scored the final three points of the quarter, to take a 14-11 lead over the Peacocks after the first frame.
Niagara opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run to go up 23-11, forcing a Peacock timeout. Niagara was able to push its lead to 26-11 before a 6-0 run by the Peacocks made it 26-17. Niagara scored five straight to make it 31-17, but the Peacocks closed as the half ended, going into the break behind 32-21.
After halftime, Niagara went up 40-29, but six straight free throws and a 6-0 run for Saint Peter's cut the deficit to 40-35. The Peacocks then extended the run to 10-2 as they cut it to a one possession game at 42-39. Peacocks trailed 45-40 heading in to final quarter.
The Peacocks trailed by as little as four points after D'Aviyon Magazine made a 3-pointer, but Niagara closed out the game with a 15-8 final quarter to knock off the Peacocks 60-48.
Saint Peter's finishes the season with an overall record of 4-26.
