Saint Peter's will open up its 26th season in program history on Saturday, August 26 at Virginia Military Institute (VMI) on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN App. This is the first road season opener for the Peacocks in seven years. The last road opener came in 2010, when that Peacock team visited Sacred Heart. The Peacocks tied Hampton, 2-2, in the 2016 opener. The last season-opening win was a 2-0 win against Wagner in 2009.
Saturday's meeting will be just the third matchup between the Peacocks and Cadets with the Peacocks holding a 2-0 series lead. Saturday's contest will be the first played at VMI's home field in Virginia. Last season, the Peacocks earned a 1-0 win over the Cadets and in 2013 the Peacocks defeated the Cadets 2-0.
VMI Scouting Report
VMI currently holds a 1-1 record after splitting the first two games of their season. The Cadets fell, 1-0, to UNC Ashville and defeated Hampton, 4-1. VMI will face American University on Thursday evening additionally prior to Saturday's meeting with Saint Peter's.
Saint Peter's will be home for the next three-straight games beginning with their home opener on Wednesday, August 30 against Delaware State. That game will be played at Caven Point Turf Field in Jersey City. The Peacocks will follow the home opener up with a contest against NJIT (September 2) and Wagner (September 6).
Looking Back at 2016
Saint Peter's ended the 2016 season with a 1-13-2 overall record and a 0-9-1 record in the MAAC. The Peacocks earned a league point for the first time in over two years last season with its draw with Fairfield and the team took playoff qualifying Canisius to overtime on senior day. Saint Peter's also gave up 34 less goals in 2016 compared to 2015, cutting its average goals allowed per game from 4.64 in 2015 to 2.81 in 2016.
Looking Forward to 2017
The Peacocks only lost three seniors from the 2016 squad and the team returns 13 players from last year's roster. Returning starters include Taylor McLean, Alyssa Conanan, Brooke Trotta, Mia Greene, Olivia Nazzaro, Alexandria Couto, Aleena Cruz, Victoria Babcock, and Kelsey Nugent.
Head coach Melissa Sherwood added six new student-athletes to the 2017 team. Nazae Craw, Isabel Fernandez, Carlee Gonzalez, Rachel Ingram, Elizabeth Pacillo, and Victoria Scarratt joined the lineup for the fall.
About the Coach
