Paiva Records First Career Hat Trick in Women’s Soccer 5-1 Blowout Win over Hampton

HAMPTON, VA – Junior forward, Barbara Paiva, recorded her first collegiate hat trick on Saturday afternoon, leading the Saint Peter's women's soccer team to a, 5-1, blowout win over the Hampton Pirates. The freshmen duo of Elizabeth Pacillo and Isabel Fernandez each added goals in the win, as the Peacocks record improves to 2-3 on the season.

"I'm very pleased to get the win, particularly for the players as we missed chances in a tie last season against Hampton" rejoiced head coach Melissa Sherwood. "Hampton was much improved this time around and played good football at times, however we capitalized in front of goal. The most pleasing aspect of today was that we took our chances and that I had two freshmen on the score sheet and my CF with a hat trick. The performance wasn't perfect but it was important to get the win today. I challenged my players to show a winning mentality today after Wednesday night's disappointment and they delivered that and now we look ahead to Wednesday."

The Peacocks didn't waste any time, practically scoring the first goal right off of the bus. Freshman, Pacillo scored the unassisted goal on a rebound chip shot over the goalie, just 22 seconds into the contest, giving the Peacocks a 1-0 lead over the Pirates. Paiva scored her first of three goals at the 5' mark, extending the Peacocks advantage to 2-0. The goal came when Paiva beat the Hampton keeper on the far side, scoring the goal off of a feed from Pacillo. At the 16' ticker, Paiva struck again, this time finding the back of the net after Olivia Nazzaro gave Paiva a long pass, then Paiva made the touch shot over the goalie to extend the lead to 3-0. Along with the dominating offensive explosion for the Peacocks, MAAC saves leader, Victoria Scarratt faced eight shots on goal, saving all eight to preserve the first half shutout for the Peacocks. Although the Peacocks led 3-0 after the first 45 minutes of action, Hampton outshot the Peacocks 13-8 and 5-2 on corner kicks.

The Pirates struck first in the second half, preventing the shutout in the 60th minute, getting a goal from Kennedy Peace.

Still holding onto the lead, the Peacocks added another goal in the 78', this time Paiva dished a pass to Fernandez who found the goal when she beat the Hampton goalkeeper and sent the shot to the far post, extending the Peacock lead to 4-1. Paiva sealed the deal at 83' scoring her third and final goal on a loose ball. The goal made the game a 5-1 victory for the Peacocks.

Paiva finished the afternoon with seven points on her three goals and one assists. Pacillo posted one goal and one assists on the day, while Fernandez added the final goal with two shots on goal.

Scarratt made 11 saves in the game, her second highest output of the season and second double-digit save game of the year. Scarratt's record as a starter improves to 2-2 on the year for the Peacocks.

The five goals were the most by the Peacocks since 2015, when that team scored 11 goals against Hampton. In that game, Paiva scored two goals against the Pirates, giving her five career goals against the Pirates in total.

The Peacocks close out non-conference action on the road at Sacred Heart on Wednesday, September 13 with kickoff at 3pm.
