Women's Tennis Begins 2017-18 Season at Hofstra Tournament

JERSEY CITY, NJ - The Saint Peter's University women's tennis team will be opening up their season at the Hofstra Invitational. The tournament will be held on Friday and Saturday, September 29 and 30. Other teams that will be in Hempstead, NY include Fairleigh Dickinson University, Fordham University, Hofstra University, LIU Brooklyn, Marist College, and Wagner College.

 

Joining the Flock - The Peacocks welcome three freshmen to the team: Marta Ortega, Rachel Valentine, and Jennifer Guilherme. Ortega hails from Spain and Valentine is a two-sport athlete who also competes on the Swimming and Diving team.

 

Welcome Back - The women's tennis team welcomes back three student-athletes: sophomore Azuri Hughes and junior co-captains Aidah Muhammad and Stephanie Falcon. Muhammad collected three singles and two doubles win last season. Falcon sealed four singles and one doubles win in her sophomore season.

 

 

Meet the Coach - Mike Scolamieri is the women's tennis head coach in 2017-18. He started out as the men's head coach and later added the women to his slate after their head coach departed. Scolamieri graduated from St. Aloysius High School where he was a basketball star on their 1959 New Jersey State Championship team. He continued his basketball career at the collegiate level playing for St. Mary's of the Plains in Kansas and later transferred to New Jersey City University. At NJCU, Scolamieri earned his Bachelor's Degree in Social Studies with a minor in English. He earned an M.A. in Curriculum and Teaching at Columbia University. Scolamieri started his coaching career as a head tennis coach at St. Mary's High School in Jersey City. He is a member of the Arlington Players' Tennis Club (APC) in Kearny, NJ and the Balboa Park Tennis Club in San Diego, CA. In 1991, he won the APC Singles "B" Championship. In 2002, he was one half of the APC Doubles Champions. Scolamieri recently resigned as captain of two adult league teams in the Arlington Player's Tennis Club. He is a 30-year member of the United States Tennis Association and is a certified Cardio Tennis Instructor. Mike and his wife Elisa, who is his assistant coach, reside in Clifton, New Jersey.
