BETHLEHEM, PA - Saint Peter's opened the season in the Crosstown tournament on friday in the Stabler Arena on the campus of Lehigh university. The fell in both games, and their record drops to 0-2 on the season.
"We had good energy but we're inconsistent which is expected for a young team," said head coach Amable Martinez. "We had some bright spots through both matches, we just need to be more consistent and do a better job when we have opportunities."
The Peacocks dropped to Crosstown Tournament hosts, Lehigh 3-0 (25-11,25-11 ,25-23). Rookie, Natalia Carbonell Torres , and juniors, Alexus Sharp, Kali Viles and Kenyale McGinnis led the team with four kills each while freshman Karla Seda added nine digs.
Saint Peter's got off to a slow start falling behind 4-11 in the first set. The Mountain Hawks maintained a double digit advantage throughout the set, and sealed the win at 25-11.
The Peacocks picked up the energy in the second match as they led 5-2 in the beginning of the set. Lehigh posted two points adding to their score, 5-4 before securing a four point-run to take the lead over the Peacocks at 8-6. The Mountain Hawks held the Peacocks to five more points as they finished the set with an identical 25-11 score.
In the third and final set, Saint Peter's got off to a good start as they rallied the Hawks tying the game early at 4-4. The Mountain Hawks went on a six-point run to lead the Peacocks 10-4. The Peacocks were able to counter with three straight points falling only three points behind Lehigh at 7-10. Four points later the Mountain Hawks led Saint Peters 14-9 before the Peacocks scored four consecutive points to close in on the Hawks at 13-14. The Mountain Hawks sideout and led Saint Peters by two, 15-13. The Peacocks were able to tie the match at 16-16 before taking the lead at 17-16. The teams rallied point for point as they tied each other seven times. Lehigh finished the game as they scored the last two points winning the match 25-23.
The Peacocks dropped the second contest of the Crosstown Tournament 3-0 to the Lafayette Leopards. Sharp and Viles led the team with a combined total of 17 kills. Sharp tallied nine while Viles scored eight kills. Freshman, Wildalys Soto led the team with 16 assists and 10 digs while sophomore, Danielle Lopez added three kills and 10 digs.
In the first set the Peacocks came out on fire as they challenge the Leopards rallying point for point tying the score four times at 2-2, 4-4, 8-8, 9-9. The Peacocks took the lead at 10-9 and scored three straight points forcing the Leopards into a timeout at 13-9. Saint Peter's then scored two more points, extending the lead over Lafayette 15-9. Lafayette broke away into a five point stretched falling behind the Peacocks 14-15. Saint Peter's continued the lead as one sideout and two kills by Sharp put them in a three-point advantage at 19-16. The Peacocks kept the lead at 21-18 before Lafayette scored three-straight points tying the score at 21 a piece. Saint Peter's scored two more point before the Leopards finished the set, 25-23.
Saint Peter's got off to a slow start as the Leopards led 6-3. The Peacocks were able to close in at 5-6 before the Leopards added four more points to lead Peacocks 10-5. The Peacocks got back in the game as they went on a five-point run including a kill by Sharp and two aces by Lopez tying the game 10-10. Lafayette bounced back into the lead at 14-11 and the Peacocks were able to stay three points behind, 12-15 by the midpoint mark. Lafayette continued to pull away gaining a five point advantage at 18-13. With Lafayette still in the lead both teams tallied two more points each marking the score at 20-16. The Leopards held the Peacocks to two more points as they went on to win the game 25-18.
In the final set, the Peacocks rallied back and forth before tying the Leopards 6-6. The Peacocks kept the momentum and led the Leopards 8-6. Lafayette countered with a five-point-run leading the Peacock's 11-8. A kill by Saint Peter's, Caitlinn Williams notched the score of 11-9. The teams then added two points each marking the score 14-12 just before the Leopards gained a seven-point advantage, 19-12. The Peacocks cut the lead to five points at 15-20 as the Leopards added two more points extend the lead to 22-15. Saint Peter's was able to tally three more points to the board 22-18, however Lafayette finished the game 25-18.
The Peacocks will resume play Saturday, August 26 against New Jersey foe NJIT, in the Bucknell Tournament. The Game is scheduled to start at 12pm.
