Saint Peter's Wraps up at the Terrier Invitational

BROOKLYN, NY - Karla Seda earned All-Tournament Team honors in the Terrier Invitational on Saturday night in the Genovesi Center. Saint Peter's dropped both games on Saturday, falling to UMES 3-1 (13-25, 18-25, 19-25) and UMASS 3-0 (18-25, 6-25, 16-25) in the final day of the Terrier Invitational.

Game 1

"We played well in the morning match," said head coach Amable Martinez. "However our hitting efficiency is not where it needs to be in order to be successful throughout a match."

Alexus Sharp posted seven kills and a team high of five service aces. Freshman, Imani Spicer added a team high 20 assists and seven digs while Daniell Lopez added six digs.  

Leaders for the Hawks were Lucia Babic with 17 kills, Mireya Ramirez with 13 digs, and Gabriella Nobrega with 18 assists.

In the first set, The Peacocks were doing very well as they tied early, 7-7 then went on to lead UMES 8-7. UMES then jumped out to a five point lead 13-8. UMES went on to increase their lead by nine at 22-13. The Peacocks scored three more point before dropping the set, 25-16.

The Peacocks got off to a good start, leading 10-6. UMES added two more points before the Peacocks landed an eight-point run  leading 18-8 including four aces from Sharp. UMES fought to catch Saint Peter's as they increased their score from 11-22 to 16-22. The Peacocks were able to hold UMES to two more points as they went on to win the set 25-18.

It was a slow start for the Peacocks in the third set as they trailed UMES 4-8. The  Hawks later went on to lead the Peacocks 13-9 then 16-11. A few plays later Saint Peter's were still behind at 15-23, but was able to score four points in a row adding to the score at 19-23. UMES was able to get position and seal the win, 25-19.

In the Final set, the Peacocks fought hard as they evened the score three times at 7, 10 and 12. UMES pulled away with three points leading the Peacocks, 15-12. The Hawks later went on to lead at, 19-15 before the Peacocks came back to trail 18-19. Saint Peter's added two more points and the Hawks won the set 25-20.


Game 2

"We came out with good energy but mentally could not keep it together, which lead to too many errors against a solid team in UMASS-Lowell," said Martinez.

Sharp added five kills, while Spicer added a team high 15 assists and six digs. Karla Seda and Yaidelis Lopez-Jimenez added 11 digs each and Lopez added five kills and nine digs.

Leaders for UMASS were Katherine Claybaugh with 10 kills and 11 digs, Hailey Shimon with a team high of 11 kills and Mckenna Bova added 28 assists.

After trailing by six early, Saint Peter's fought to come back as they trailed the Minutemen by two at, 17-15. Saint Peter's added three more points before the Minutemen sealed the win at, 25-18.  

In the second set, the Minutemen set the tone early as they lead 9-3. The Peacocks scored three more points as UMASS won the set 25-6.

The Peacocks got off to a good start as they led the Minuteman 9-6. The Minutemen were able to close in on the Peacocks as they came back to tie the game 11-11. The Minutemen then gained an 8-point lead at, 19-11. The Peacocks added five more points to the board and UMASS won the set 25-16.

The Peacocks will travel to New York to challenge Fordham College on Tuesday, September 7pm.
