Women's Volleyball Ends Non-Conference Schedule with Defeat Against St. Francis Brooklyn

JERSEY CITY, NJ -  The Saint Peter's women's volleyball team fell to St. Francis Brooklyn, 3-0 (25-27, 22-25,17-25) Wednesday night in the Yanitelli Center. Alexus Sharp led the Peacocks with 10 kills with a .497 hitting percentage.

"Alexus had a great offensive match tonight, which is an indication of our passing throughout the night," said head coach Amable Martinez. "She was able to execute some smart shots and also use her power to get some kills." 

Kenyale McGinnis followed Sharp with eight kills and Natalia Carbonell Torres added six kills. Danielle Lopez and Karla Seda added six digs each.

Leaders for the Terriers were Aleksandra Gligoric with 14 kills and eight digs and Vanja Miljacic added 12 kills. 

In the first set, the Peacocks brought the competitive spirit as they tied the Terriers at 15. The Terriers started to pull away as they led the Peacocks 20-16. Saint Peter's closed in on the Terriers at 20-21, then later evened the score at, 24. The Peacocks scored one more point to take a commanding 25-24 lead over the Terriers, but St. Francis Brooklyn reeled off the final three points of the set to take the set 27-25. 

The Peacocks trailed the Terriers at 4-8 early in the second set before breaking into an 8-1 run, that lead to the Peacocks taking a 12-9 lead. St. Francis Brooklyn caught up to the Peacocks knotting the score at 12 each. Both teams went point for point tying the score four times. At 19-19, the Peacocks added two straight points, taking the lead at 21-19. The Terriers held Saint Peter's to 21 and gained four point jumping back in the lead at 23-21. The Peacocks added one more point before the Terriers came back to win the set 25-22.

In the final set, the Peacocks played from behind, falling behind the Terriers at 12-7. Saint Peter's were unable to close in on the Terriers as they increased the lead to 18-11. The Peacocks added three straight points trailing St. Francis Brooklyn 18-14. The Terriers held the Peacocks to three more points and finished the set at 25-17.

"We made some changes going into the match that worked in a positive manner for us," said Martinez. "We had many positive moments throughout the match, we were just not able to execute as planned at the end of sets."

Up next the Peacocks will play back to back games as they begin MAAC play. First, the team welcomes Niagara on Saturday, September 16 at 3pm and then they host Canisius on Sunday, September 17 at 1pm.
