BUFFALO, NY - The Saint Peter's University women's volleyball team dropped a conference match to Canisius 3-0 (25-16, 25-16, 25-17) Sunday afternoon, in the Koessler Athletics Center.
Alexus Sharp led the Peacocks posting seven kills and two blocks for a total of nine points. Natalia Carbonell Torres and Kenyale McGinnis followed adding four kills each, Karla Seda led defensively with 10 digs.
Leaders for Canisius were Sara Lesley with 16 kills, Claire Leonard with 13 kills and defensively Sofia Lopez Acosta added the team's high of 24 digs.
In the first set, The Peacocks trailed the Griffins by one point at 6-7. Canisius then added three points to lead 10-6 and the Peacocks quickly caught up falling behind one point short at 9-10. The Peacocks added two points and the Griffins pulled away to a seven point lead at 18-11. Saint Peter's was unable to cut the deficit and added only five points as the Griffins won the set 25-16.
The Peacocks and Canisius began the second set going score for score, eventually tying up at 7-7. Canisius scored seven straight points increasing their lead to 14-7. The Peacocks were eventually able cut the Griffins lead to four points as they trailed 15-11. Canisius did not let up as they added four straight points leading the Peacocks 19-11. Saint Peter's fought to come back and added five points to their score before the Griffins won the set 25-16.
In the final set the Griffins secured a five point lead at 10-5. The Peacocks added two points before Canisius extended their lead to 18-7. The Peacocks fought to catch up to the Griffins as they got within 10 points with the deficit at 14-21. Saint Peter's then held Canisius at game point and added three points to their score at 17-24. However the Griffins sideout to win the set 25-17.
The Peacocks will resume play on Sunday at Niagara on October 22. The game is scheduled to start at 1pm.
