JERSEY CITY, NJ – A 17-5 run to begin the second half led to the Saint Peter's College Peacocks (0-2) falling to the Robert Morris University Colonials (2-0) tonight, 69-52 in the Peacocks home opener. Saint Peter's led 29-24 late in the first half, but Robert Morris scored the final seven points of the first half and then 17 of the first 22 of the second half to take a commanding lead. Karee Ferguson, Lamin Fulton and Yvon Raymond each scored 10 points to lead Saint Peter's.
Robert Morris scored the first point of the contest on a free throw, but Saint Peter's scored the next four to take a 4-1 lead with 17:18 to play in the first half. The Peacocks then led 7-6 and went on a 6-2 run to take a 13 -8 lead. The Colonials then scored nine unanswered to take a 17-13 lead and extended the run to 14-3 for a 22-16 lead at 9:04.
Saint Peter's used a 13-2 run to take a 29-24 lead with 1:42 remaining. Robert Morris then scored the final seven points of the half to take 31-29 lead into the break.
Ferguson scored a game-high 10 points for Saint Peter's in the first half. Raymond added eight points. Russell Johnson scored eight points, while Coron Williams scored seven points. The Peacocks shot 46.2% from the field, while Robert Morris shot 40%. The Peacocks controlled the glass 18-11, but committed nine turnovers to the Colonials six.
Robert Morris came right out of the break and extended their lead, going on a 17-5 run to start the second half and took their largest lead at 48-34 with 12:35 to play. The entire run was 24-5 over the end of the first half and first seven plus minutes of the second half.
Saint Peter's then trailed 50-36 and scored the next four points to cut the deficit down to 10 at 50-40 with 9:25 to play. The Colonials then used a quick 8-2 run to take their largest lead at 58-42 with 6:44 to play and never looked back, extending their advantage to as many as 19 points in the second frame. That put the game out of reach for the Peacocks
Ferguson was 4-9 from the field and also had four blocked shots. Fulton was 3-5 and had a pair of rebounds, while Raymond was 4-7 from the floor with seven rebounds and four assists. Velton Jones finished with a game high 19 points to lead Robert Morris.
The Peacocks shot over 43% from the field, but allowed the Colonials to shoot 50%. The board battle was tight with Saint Peter's edging Robert Morris 27-26, but the Peacocks committed 16 turnovers.
Saint Peter's will return to action on Friday night as they travel to face Fairleigh Dickinson at 7pm in Teaneck, NJ.
