Despite establishing a two-goal first half lead, the Saint Peter's University women's soccer team (1-13-0, 0-4 MAAC) was unable to maintain their advantage and fell to Canisius College (3-12-0, 1-4 MAAC) in double overtime this evening. Canisius' Brianna Smith led the way in the Golden Griffins' comeback, recording a hat-trick to account for the entire Griff offensive effort.
The Peacocks got on the board early, scoring at just under the three minute mark as junior forward Emily Fenice assisted on senior Jamie Lisanti's team-leading fourth goal of the year (1-0).
With ten minutes remaining in the frame, Greta Vogel netted her second goal in as many games, assisted by Lisanti, to make the score 2-0 in the Peacocks' favor.
For the half, the Griffs out-shot Saint Peter's 12-6. Junior Nicole Tafrow managed 4 saves in the frame in just her second match in goal.
Smith started her scoring tear at 64:15, as she tapped in a pass by teammate Megan Mahoney. She would score the game-tying goal with less than four minutes remaining in regulation (86:29).
While both teams failed to score in the first over-time period, Canisius did manage 2 shots, 1 of which was on goal. Saint Peter's however, was unable to register an attempt.
The Golden Griffins closed out the match in the 107th minute of play, when Smith beat Tafrow for the game winning goal, following a pass in the box by Katie Griffin.
Saint Peter's failed to record a shot in either overtime period, while Canisius took a combined 6 total shots. Tafrow recorded her seventh and final save in the second OT frame, before allowing the decisive goal.
