Box Score Despite keeping close early on in the second frame, the Saint Peter's University women's basketball team (0-1) was defeated 82-48 by the Brown University Bears (1-0 this afternoon. The Peacocks trailed by just one (42-41) six miutes into the second frame, but the visitors could muster just one field goal in the final fourteen minutes of play. All six of their final points came by way of free throw attempts.
Kristal Edwards finished the game with 20 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds to lead the squad.
The Peacocks briefly led in the opening frame, 3-2, following a trey from Khadijah Young at 18:43. An 8-0 run by the Bears however, capped by back-to-back three point field goals from Lindsay Nickel gave the hosts a 10-3 lead and forced a Saint Peter's timeout.
Saint Peter's were able to trim the hosts' lead to one (10-9) after freshman Hala Mostafa El Shaarawy netted her first career basket at 13:03. The Peacocks would be unsuccessful in regaining the lead in the next three minutes however, committing three turnovers during that time while the Bears jumped in front 17-9.
Brown's Lindsay Nickel proceeded to score the next five points to extend the lead to 22-15 with just over five minutes remaining in the stanza. Kristal Edwards brought Saint Peter's within three (27-24) after scoring five of their last seven points at 2:49, however Nickel drained her fourth three-ball of the half less than twenty seconds later to regain a six-point cushion.
The game entered the half-time break with a score of 30-26, in Brown's favor. For the half, the Peacocks had a slight advantage on shooting percentage, connecting on 29.6% of their field goal attempts in comparison to Brown's 29.4%.
Edwards paved the way for Saint Peter's in the frame with 10 points on 4-7 shooting, while Brown's Nickel had 16 points to pace the hosts. She was 4-9 from long distance in the half.
Kaydine Bent opened up the second with a quick basket, 17 seconds in to bring Saint Peter's within two (30-28), but the Bears proceeded to go on a 7-0 run over the next minute and a half.
Edwards soon led a Peacock comeback however, scoring seven points, including a jumper in the paint to bring her team within one (42-41) for the first time since the 13:05 mark of the first half.
Brown would explode for an 40-7 run to close out the contest, during which the Peacocks were 1-8 from the field and committed 14 turnovers. Saint Peter's lone basket came on a lay up by Antonia Smith at 1:54.
Prior to Smith's bucket, Saint Peter's went over twelve minutes without scoring a field goal dating back to Edwards two-points basket at 14:22.
Both Hagberg and Young contributed 7 points in the loss.
Saint Peter's returns to action this Wednesday, Novemeber 14th, for their first home contest of the year against Lehigh. Tipoff is scheduled for 7pm.
