Saint Peter's University Athletics

Women's Basketball Unable To Maintain Early Lead, Fall 64-53

Box Score

In their third contest of the 2012-13 season, the Saint Peter's University women's basketball team were defeated by the Navy Midshipmen 64-53. The Peacocks maintained a lead mid-way through the first frame, but a 12-4 run by the hosts gave them a 21-17 advantage they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.

Senior forward Kristal Edwards led the squad in scoring for the third straight time, tallying 13 total points, while grabbing 6 rebounds. Lovisa Hagberg also finished in double-figures, scoring a career-high 10 points and just missing a double-double by pulling down 9 boards.

Lovisa Hagberg opened up the scoring in the first frame, accounting for all of the Peacocks' points to create an early 5-0 advantage. Hagberg nailed a trey from the left wing just over 40 seconds into the half and followed up with two made free throws less than a minute later. The Midshipmen quickly fought their way back in the game, following consecutive easy layups to get within one (5-4) at 16:55.

Navy took their first lead of the game (6-5) as Kara Pollinger found Jade Geif under the basket in the fourteenth minute. Four lead changes and two tied scores occurred over the next ten minutes until the Midshipmen formed a 13-2 run to break a 15-15 tie. A conventional three-point play from Alix Membreno at 3:47 (28-17) gave the Mids their largest lead up until that point. They would lead by as many as 13 before heading into the half-time break in front 32-22.

For the half, the Peacocks shot just 7-24 (29.2%) from the floor. More than half of their field goals came from beyond the arc (4-11, 3 ptr). Navy shot 41.4% from the field and were paced by Kara Pollinger's 12 points. Edwards led the Peacocks in the stanza with 7 points.

Saint Peter's managed to cut the hosts' lead to single digits on multiple occasions in the second stanza, but never got closer than eight points (35-27, 16:23). Navy led by as many as 17 points (55-38) with 6:15 remaining in the game.

The Peacocks were outshot 41.8% to 34.0% from the field and 34.8% to 28.6% from three point range. Saint Peter's did shoot well from the line however, connecting on 11 of 13 free throw attempts.

Navy outrebounded Saint Peter's by a 39-34 margin and committed 18 turnovers, while forcing 20.

Kaydine Bent contributed 8 points, 2 blocks, while Aziza May had 7 points, 5 assists in her first game back for Saint Peter's.

The Peacocks return to action this Tuesday for a 7pm road match at Sacred Heart.
