Women's Basketball Falls to Greyhounds 61-54, Despite Double-Digit First Half Lead

The Peahens surrendered an 11 point first half lead Friday evening, falling to the Loyola Greyhounds 61-54. Three players scored in double-figures for Saint Peter's, with Jynae Judson's 15 points being a game-high. With the loss Saint Peter's falls to 3-23, 3-12 MAAC, while Loyola improves to 13-13, 9-6 MAAC.

Saint Peter's entered the first media timeout of the game with a 4-2 advantage (15:50), with a basket a piece from Kristal Edwards and Jynae Judson. The Peahens would outscore the visitors by a 10-5 margin over the next seven minutes, creating a 12-5 lead.

A steal and fastbreak layup by Judson put the Peahens ahead by 9 at 14-5, forcing Loyola Head Coach Joe Logan to call a time-out at 10:53. Judson gave Saint Peter's their first double-digit lead (16-5) just over a minute later as she banked in a jump shot from inside the paint.

The Greyhounds entered the under-eight media timeout shooting just 2-19 (.105), and still trailing 16-5. Loyola's offense picked up however, as they ended the first half on a 6-2 run to head into the intermission behind 27-21.

Jynae Judson led all scorers in the frame with 12 points, on 6-12 shooting. The Peahens shot 39.3% from the floor (0-4 3FG) while Loyola shot 27.6% from the field, 28.6% from three. Kara Marshall led the Greyhounds with 6 points in the half.

Loyola maintained the momentum heading into the second half, outscoring SPC 6-2 to get within one at 29-28 (16:11).

The Greyhounds gained their first lead of the game, 33-32, at the 13:18 minute mark, after the Peahens turned the ball over and Miriam McKenzie capitalized on the mistake with a layup in transition.

Kaydine Bent paced the Peahen offense, scoring eight consecutive points for the hosts to open the frame. 

The visitors continued to forge forward, going on a 16-1 run dating back to the 15:02 mark. Loyola established their largest lead of the game, 36-48 (12 points), following a layup by Miriam McKenzie in the fifth minute. Saint Peter's came as close as four minutes at 1:54 behind a Quiana Porter layup to make the score 53-49, before the Greyhounds closed out the 61-54 victory.

Overall Saint Peter's 32.8% (27.8% in the second half) and 14.3% from long distance while Loyola shot 34.5% and 40%, respectively. The Peahens committed 16 turnovers (9 in the second half), which Loyola scored 20 points off of (17 in the second half). SPC outrebounded their opponent for the 13th time this season, finishing with 46 board to Loyola's 33.

Jynae Judson finished with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals to lead Saint Peter's. Kaydine Bent added 13 points, 6 rebounds, while Kristal Edwards finished with 12 points, 8 rebounds. Quiana Porter contributed a game-high 11 board to go along with her 7 points and 4 blocks.

The Greyhounds had four players in double-figures: Kara Marshall (14 points), Katie Sheahin (12 points), Nicole Krusen (11 points) and Alyssa Sutherland (10 points).

Saint Peter's returns to action on Sunday as they travel to Riverdale, NY to face the Manhattan Jaspers for a 2pm tip.
