The Peacocks (2-10) split Saturday's double-header against Savannah State (4-10) by scores of 4-3 and 10-3, picking up their second victory of the season in the second game. Saint Peter's dropped the first game in extra innings (10), but were able to avenge the loss later in the afternoon needing just 7 innings to defeat the Bulls. Russ Stupienski pitched two-thirds of an inning in the first contest, but gave up two earned runs, including the game winner. Matt Yuhas (7 innings, 7 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts) threw a complete game for the Peacocks in the second game to be gain the win.
In game one, Saint Peter's led 1-0 heading into the third inning after Gonzalez singled in Speckmann from second base. Savannah State tied the score with an unearned run two innings later, and both teams would remain scoreless for the next two frames.
Russ Stupienski started off the sixth with a double to right field and in the next at bat, Preston Aldridge would also reach base by way of an error by the Bulls' shortstop. Stupienski, who advanced to third on the miscue, scored in the next at bat as Chris Grimes came up with an RBI sacrifice bunt.
Savannah State evened the score in the bottom of the inning- the last run scored by either team in regulation. Matt Mancini recorded the go-ahead fun for Saint Peter's to start off the tenth, scoring on a sacrifice fly by Pat Farrell. Savannah State scored two runs to come away with the walk-off victory in their half of the frame. The Bulls needed just three walks and two hit batsmen to score their markers.
The Peacocks out-hit the Bulls 7-6, and committed three errors to the host's two.
Entering the second game, Saint Peter's briefly led in the first inning, after Stupienski scored on a fielder's choice (RBI, Grimes). Savannah State tied the game in the bottom of the first, but that was the closest they would be for the remainder of the contest.
Saint Peter's regained their lead in the second, scoring two runs on three hits. A single to left field by Mike Scicutella scored Brian Koster and James Smith who were both on base after singling on. In the fourth, the Peacocks added two more runs, this time with two outs. Scicutella again brought home two; Alberto Rodriguez and Koster.
Savannah State added a second run in the fifth off a solo homerun by John Arnold.
The Peacocks continued to add to their 5-1 advantage, exploding for four runs in the sixth. SPC started off the frame with back to back triples (Nicholas Henriquez and Smith- RBI) to make the score 6-1. Smith later scored on a error by the Bulls' catcher to account for the seventh Peacock run. With one out, Stupienski singled in Koster and Rodriguez later scored the fourth run of the inning on another Savannah State error 9-2.
A two-base hit by Sean Henry to score Smith in the seventh gave Saint Peter's their tenth and last run of the game. The Bulls also scored in the inning, on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Saint Peter's was led by Mike Scicutella who went 2-4 with 3 RBI. James Smith also went 3-4 with three runs scored and an RBI and Brian Koster finished the game a perfect 2-2 with three runs scored as well. Alberto Rodriguez contributed an RBI and two runs scored, recording one hit in four at bats, while Preston Aldridge went 2-4 from the plate.
The Peacocks return to action on Sunday with an additional double-header against the Bulls. First pitch of the first game is scheduled for 12pm.
