Recap:
Holding on to a one-run lead through six innings, the Saint Peter's College baseball team was able to add on four runs in the last three innings to top St. Joseph's University 5-1 Sunday afternoon. The Peacocks got on the board in the fourth inning and added a second run in the seventh before the Hawks scored their lone marker in the bottom of the frame. The one run deficit was the closest the hosts would be before Saint Peter's rattled off the four extra runs. Matt Mancini picked up his first win of the season, after pitching 6.1 innings and giving up 6 hits, 3 walks, 1 earned run and striking out five.
Justyn Carter doubled on to start the fourth inning and advanced to third two batters later after a sacrifice bunt by Russ Stupienski. An RBI groundout by Chris Grimes put the Peacocks ahead 1-0. Grimes led the way for Saint Peter's in the seventh inning as well, as he reached first by way of a base hit and later scored on a single by Alberto Rodriguez (2-0).
Saint Joseph's threatened to come back in the bottom half of the frame, scoring on an RBI single, but the Peacocks came right back the following inning recording two runs on 3 hits and 2 Hawk errors. A single by Carter started off the inning, and the senior proceeded to steal second and advance to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Stupienski later brought home Carter on a two-base hit to right field. Grimes again came through for the Peacocks, contributing his own RBI double to score Stupienski and make the score 4-1.
A homerun by Mike Scicutella in the ninth inning accounted for the fifth SPC run.
Saint Peter's out-hit the Hawks 10-8, with Chris Grimes leading the team; 3-4, 2 RBI, 1 run scored. Justyn Carter also had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-5 with two runs scored. Mike Scicutella (1-3) and Russ Stupienski (1-4) each added a hit, RBI and run scored.
The Peacocks return to action Tuesday, March 20th as they travel to South Orange, NJ to face off against the Seton Hall Pirates. First pitch is slated for 4pm.
