Gomez Makes Big Splash In Collegiate Debut For Swimming And Diving At Sonny Werblin Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Jonathan Gomez (Cali, Columbia/Patrick Henry [Va.]) had an impressive collegiate debut after recording a first and a second-place finish to pace the Saint Peter's men's and women's swimming and diving team in the first day of the Sonny Werblin Invitational on Friday.

Gomez won the 500 free with a time of 4:42.77 for the Peacocks only individual win on the day and then he finished second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:57.88.

Sophomore Sean Dunne (Holmdel, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) also had a great first day of the season. The sophomore placed second in the 50 free (22.17) and third in the 200 IM (1:59.72) before swimming the second leg of the winning 400-medley relay (3:37.49).

Sophomore Omar Hassan (Bayonne, N.J./High-Tech) opened the relay and was followed by Dunne, senior Alejandro Rubin Panvini (Caracas, Venezuela/San Ignacio) and Trey McGraw (Berkley, W. Va./Patrick Henry) in the first-place finish. McGraw also finished seventh in the 500 free (4:55.71) and Rubin Panvini was ninth in the event (4:58.86).

Freshman Nicholas Reipe (Middlesex, N.J./Saint Joseph) finished fifth in the 500 free (4:52.48) and freshman Manuel Garcia (Mexico City, Mexico/The American School Foundation A.C.) placed fifth in the 50 free (22.17).

Sophomore Rachel Wuko (Wildwood Crest, N.J./Wildwood Crest) paced the women's swimming and diving team with a second-place standing in the 50 free (24.50).

Wuko also anchored the third place 400-medley relay (4:01.86). Freshman Matea Samardzic (Split, Croatia/Ekonowsko Biotehnicka Skola), junior Alexandra Sison (Jersey City, N.J./Saint Dominic Academy) and senior Cristina Decisneros (Tampa, Fla./Sickles) opened the relay for Saint Peter's.

Samardzic also placed fifth in the 200 IM (2:13.12) and ninth in the 500 free (5:15.40) in her collegiate debut.  Freshman Anastasiia Mushtei (Dneiptopnovsh, Ukraine/Finans  Deukomi) placed seventh in the 500 free (5:13.32) and 10th in the 200 IM (2:16.73) while freshman Maria Feneron (Griesheim pres Mdsheim, France/Lycee Henri Meck) was eighth in the 200 IM (2:13.89) in their collegiate debuts.

The Peacocks return to action in the final day of the Sonny Werblin Invitational. Events begin at 9 a.m.
